Radio Disney Justice: A Teen-Pop Extravaganza - (Results: WINNER)

@WhenTheSunGoesDown (8) seems to have just discovered this which makes me regret not having just sent of a list of my favs a long time ago. Maybe it'd be a 10 by now: "A wig reveal!"
No need to worry, I actually bopped to this a lot when it came out! I was referring to the wig reveal in the video.
"I’ve always liked clear umbrellas. They’re so pretty. I bet by the end of this rate I’ll have ordered one off the internet."
This reminds me of when I wanted one, found out these were also called "cage umbrellas", then looking that up on aliexpress and being greeted with

So I don't enjoy that this has become customary in my rates, but this voter never seems to give me any choice.

It's not. And also note that no one guessed this would be her first elimination..

#57. Hilary Duff - What Dreams Are Made Of - 7.000

Lowest: 1 (@Blond) 3 (@Mina)

My Score: 9

Voter Bloc 5: #40

Haze's Focus: I'm pretty much stunned to see how low this finished, as I would've expected it to beat at least a few of her other songs. However, if we actually analyze the results of her discography rate:

What Dreams Are Made Of (#22)
Come Clean (#1)
So Yesterday (#8)
Fly (#19)
The Getaway (#20)
Wake Up (#10)
Beat of My Heart (#23)
With Love (#6)
Stranger (#7)
All About You (#5)
Sparks (#11)

You can that maybe we should have seen this coming, but also why everyone was saying it would be "Beat of My Heart". It also shows you how these 11 songs are the cream of the crop, so Hilary should be slaying. I added this to the mix with the fact that I wanted Demi's "Can't Back Down" in and figured I couldn't throw that soundtrack song into the rate without adding this classic. I gave this an 8 in the discography rate but something was working for me a bit more this time around, maybe nostalgia, maybe I was just in a good mood. I'd definitely rank it bit higher than "Beat of My Heart" so there's that and probably even "Fly" for that matter. Keep in mind that she's up against top-class teen pop here and was never just going to have all of her songs reach the Top 40.

I'm going to choose to ignore @Blond's (1) utter hatred and shade and instead applaud the fact that Hilary made it to the stage and managed to beat 30 other countries: "Sounds like a 19th place Eurovision entry."

What's funny about this score and comment from @Mina (3) is that she must have somehow heard this a bunch of times since the Hilary rate where it became more annoying to her ears because she gave it a 6.5 last time: "My poor ears." #receipts

Also it's kind of sad that the closest thing to musical theatre gets tanked by you. Well I tried to appeal to your tastes.

@Sally_Harper (4) wasn't moved while surprisingly sounding like she's hearing it for the first time: "This isn’t doing much for me."

On the other hand, @Remorque (6) has been critical of it from the beginning: "Although I do like me a lot of Hilary, I just can't get over how joyless this is... Seeing it in the context of the movie makes it a bit better, but still... And is that Haylie suddenly appearing at the end to do her ad-libs?? Gurl."

@livefrommelbs (7) wipes away a tear while looking back: "Where it all began! Iconic in every way. Two Hilarys for the price of one, kickstarting the most iconic Disney pop career of the bench. SING TO ME PAOLO."

It's a community standard according to @Pecans (8): "The anthem of every gay millennial’s childhood, if they had taste. What an iconic track."

@Martyn (8) wants to pop everyone's balloon and give us facts, how's that any fun?: "It's good, but clearly not her singing on the whole song, on both the studio and movie version. Too many people think this is her best song."

@unnameable (8) was only here for the music from the Disney girls not their acting: "fun bop, but I was not a Lizzie stan so have no sentimental attachment to it."

It's like Sprocky's BF (10) had revelation right in front of our eyes: "OOH. This is from the film. I love this.

It doesn't matter who's singing this because @GhettoPrincess (10) looks back with fond memories: "I credit this song for making me fall in love with Hilary. I actually prefer the movie version which includes Haylie Duff’s vocals but it’s such a great Disney memory for me."

@31entrance (10) was happy I added this to rate, so they could get the DVD out again: "I literally lost count of how many times I've watched the Lizzie McGuire movie, it just fills me with so much happiness. and when Lizzie took off her dress to reveal pants (or as the brits call it "trousers") underneath it I was shook!"

Oh I can't wait to hear what poptarts is going to say about what @WhenTheSunGoesDown (10) almost did. Also, I can't help but chuckle at how he has knack for simultaneously dragging and honoring a song: "The violins in the movie version’s bridge are legendary (to me). Can’t believe we got that inferior version on the album. I almost gave this an 11 for the sheer entertainment value of the movie switching between Hilary’s voice and “some 45 year old classically trained singer lady” several times with no regard to making them even remotely match."

I know @iheartpoptarts (11) was struggling about choosing her 11 (so was I) but she decided to give it to the song that helped created this subgenre in the first place, so for that I'll always be thankful: "This is where it all began, guys. And Disney got off to such a perfect start. I might have to go back and 11 it later. (EDIT: I did. It’s just so HAPPY.)"

Look at how close it was, not like this elimination is any consolation for @iheartpoptarts.

#56. Hilary Duff - Beat of My Heart - 7.025

My Score: 8

Charts: #8 (Italy) <-- That Lizzie McGuire Movie promo just wouldn't let up. #13 (Australia) #17 (Spain) Switzerland (#89) #90 (2006 Australia Year-End)

Info: "Beat of My Heart" is the second single from Hilary's compilation album Most Wanted. It was written by Hilary the Dead Executives which was a production team that included Hilary's boyfriend Joel Madden. This was the first time Hilary felt like she was own her own creatively and wanted to present an entirely new sound to her fans. She was even nervous about how they would react to it. According to Hilary, the song is about coming out a relationship where the girl was more into the guy than he was into her, so it left her not feeling like herself with this song being the moment when she finally broke free and came out of her shell again. The music video showed a new mature side for Hilary with it being a homage to Bond girls. Reviews were mixed with some comparing it to something Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, or Bananarara would record in the 80s and others saying it was far too repetitive.

Hazey's Focus: I would've have this go out before "What Dreams Are Made Of" because while I still use it for a stray play here and there, I've always found it to be very repetitive myself. Don't get me wrong it's still an upbeat, positive little bop and always will be but she's done far better. If you put it up against the electropop she did on her last two albums, it pales in comparison.

I think @Sally_Harper (6) is kind of in the same place I am with it, but I wouldn't be as harsh: "This is kind of irritating but also quite the bop. I don’t know how that works, but I’m just going to go with it."

Luckily @GhettoPrincess (7) has more of the right idea: "Very repetitive but catchy, not the best single choice though."

@livefrommelbs (7) knew this when Hilary finally had some input: "A lyrical masterpiece, obvs." which is probably why @unnameable (9) called it a "lovable song".

In fact, @Martyn (8) going a step further by stating Hilary doesn't need to do much to top the lessers: "I wrote 12 words and sang them multiple times. Still better than some of the new people."

I'm not sure which one @WhenTheSunGoesDown (8) is referring to, maybe the New Year's Eve one, but I'll let him fill us in: "Is there anything better than that HORRENDOUS live performance she did for this song? Her stepping over those dancers is so delightfully awkward."

The Bond Girl thing wasn't working for @Remorque (8): "I've always liked this one more from the Most Wanted compilation, as it's a lot more fun than Wake Up and she gives us a much better performance. That middle 8 is fantastic too. The only thing about this “era” is that I've never been able to enjoy watching the video for... well, circumstances."

While most of us stan for BIBO or Dignity @iheartpoptarts (10) has always had other ideas: "So relentlessly happy, and this era is her career peak. This electro-dancey sort of pop/rock is a good way for Disney to do it!"
