Who Is That? #4 - Bridgit Mendler
Her first experience with Disney was appearing as the recurring role of Juliet van Heusen on Selena Gomez-led show
Wizards of Waverly Place. From that she landed the star role of Teddy Duncan on
Good Luck Charlie, which ran for almost four years. On the show, she recorded her family's life and used the situations as lessons for her baby sister Charlie to have when she grew up. The show is also noted for having an episode titled "Down a Tree" featuring a same-sex relationship. There was a huge protest against it by viewers and the conservative group "One Million Moms" but Disney held their ground and ran the show as planned.
In 2011, Bridgit starred in the Disney film
Lemonade Mouth which tells the story of five students who form a band in detention. This is where her first singles come from and I almost added "Somebody" because it's one of my favorite songs from her, but I felt it might be a tough sell for new listeners being your prototypical "inspirational ballad" and all. Both "Somebody" and "Determinate" did actually chart on the Hot 100 too. I probably could've added "Determinate" to the song list, since its sound fits in more with the rest of the rate, but just ran out of spots in the end. I couldn't add everything!
In 2012, her debut album
Hello My Name Is... was released by Hollywood Records. Bridgit had a hand in writing all the songs and the production as well. She says her biggest influence in music is Bob Dylan which makes sense because a lot of her music has an "old school" feel to it. For this album Bridgit said she was inspired by the Fugees, especially for lead single "Ready or Not". In her most recent projects, after she left Disney behind, there's definitely a more R&B/jazz/indie mixture going on when you hear music from her EP
Nemesis for example. She's a well educated woman who has graduated with an anthropology degree at USC and is highly touted for her philanthropy work, even becoming the second youngest winner (after Miranda Cosgrove) of the Role Model of the Year award from Common Sense Media. The best word I could use to describe her music from
Hello My Name Is... is that it's more 'funky' than your typical Disney-pop album. Don't get me wrong,. it's still a basic bop showcase but you can definitely see the embers that would grow into the flames of her vision later on in her music career. She's just
different. Listen to the two songs you'll be scoring below and you might see what I'm talking about. For anyone who might be a newcomer to the subgenre, know that "Hurricane" is widely considered one of our 'best kept secrets' and celebrated by the fanbase as a cornerstone track.
In case you want to hear what she is doing these days, here is my favorite from her EP
Nemesis.
Music Comparisons: Her voice is often compared to Lily Allen and Cher Lloyd, so a teen-pop version of them seems to fit the bill.
