Radio Disney Justice: A Teen-Pop Extravaganza - (Results: WINNER)

As much as I was happy to have "The Getaway" reach the Top 20 and as much as I love Selena, it's kind of hilarious to see this song ranked so highly and one spot ahead.

Also we're losing yet another 11 here..

#19. Selena Gomez - Hit the Lights - 8.138

Highest: 11 (@Sprockrooster) 10 x 4 (@31entrance, @Pecans, @unnameable, @Charley)

Lowest: 5 x 2 (@Sally_Harper, @Blond) 6 x 2 (@GhettoPrincess, @aniraz)

Final Voters: #19

Charts: #3 (U.S. Bubbling Under) #11 (Belgium) #37 (Bulgaria) #55 (Canada) #63 (Russia) #33 (Slovakia)

Certifications: Platinum (U.S.)

Release: Third single from Selena's third album When the Sun Goes Down, in January 2012. It's the only single by Selena Gomez & The Scene that was excluded from Selena's compilation album For You.

Songwriters: Dreamlab (also producers), Tony Nilsson

Hazey's Focus: As we could see from the voter blocs, this one had a much different journey than some of the songs we've been eliminating lately. Seeing it somewhere in the 30s for most of the voting period honestly felt about right, but most of the high scores came in at the end and this often overlooked single climbed its way to a #19 placement. I'm betting our 11-giver @Sprockrooster is both shocked and thrilled or they should be. When we did Selena's discography rate in 2014, "Come & Get It" finished at #5, while "Hit the Lights" fell at #13, so the times have definitely changed. This has always been just shy of a 10 for me but I thoroughly enjoy it. My favorite parts will always be the middle eight and especially the "It's a mad mad world, gotta make an escape. It's a perfect world, if we go all the way" which caught me off guard the first time I heard the song and now I can't live without it.

Dance music queen @Mina (7) was always going to be ready for this one, calling it "catchy".

However those elements were exactly why @Sally_Harper (5) was going the other way: "Needs more prominent piano and less generic ravey synths please."

@iheartpoptarts (7) is pretty critical towards what Selena called her most enjoyable video up to that point: "This is such a random video. Did they just find a secret underground disco in a farmhouse in the middle of a cornfield?"

I'm not sure this title from @livefrommelbs (8) necessarily applies anymore, considering where we are in the countdown: "AN UNDERRATED BOP."

Aw, Sprocky's BF (9) is there to support to his boyfriend, but will it be reciprocated when their 11 falls?: "This is getting points extra cause @Sprockrooster is losing himself everytime he plays this."

@unnameable (10) is ready for the club: "what a dancefloor banger!"

@WhenTheSunGoesDown (9.75) still feels like he was cheated by Selegend: "“I’m going to do all of my singles at the Stars Dance Tour!” *proceeds to skip this one cause it’s way out of her range*"

While @Pecans (10) just wished it had been a bigger moment for her career: "Forever will this song break my heart: this is one of the easiest 10s I’ve given. Hit the Lights deserved SO much better."

Selena was always going to get @Sprockrooster's (11) and it all started with a magical plane ride on some flawless airline that has flawless taste: "I remember flying to the US and Selena's album was one of 5 available albums on the media set at the airplane. I got acquainted with the album there and this song specific. It always will be linked to that. And it made me dig deep into Selena's discography. I think I actually adore Selena's 'The Heart Wants What It Wants' more now. So I am glad I didn't have to choose and can save that 11 for the Selena rate!"

I hope Selena is safe for a while. We could lose some of the lesser Hilary songs at this point, and suddenly I'm wondering if I torpedoed 'The Climb' hard enough.

HIT THE LIGHTS IS AN ANTHEM. Selena can almost fuck off, but in all honesty I didnot expect this to do so well. And yes at my voting block doing it well. Also, a bit surprised @DJHazey gave this a 9,0 as I thought he didn't like it as much, but I am clearly mistaken with that 9,0.

I don't consider myself as a big fan of the song and it's probably one of my least favorite singles of her and yet I gave it a 9 too. The power of our Whisper Chanteuse.

The next song was what I used for a thread title for the discography rate..

You can vote tough, just do it with love love love love..

And yes @iheartpoptarts gets her way again even though this is faaar from 'lesser'.

We could lose some of the lesser Hilary songs at this point.

#18. Hilary Duff - With Love - 8.200

Highest: 10 x 7 (@GhettoPrincess, @Mina, @soratami, @Remorque, @Martyn, @unnameable, DJHazey)

Lowest: 4 (Sprocky's BF) 4.5 (@Alouder98) 6.5 (@iheartpoptarts)

Release: Second single from Hilary's third album Dignity, in February 2007.

Songwriters: Hilary Duff, Kara DioGuardi, Vada Noles (also producer), Julius "Logic" Diaz (also producer)

Fun Facts: Hilary originally only wanted to use the song to promote her fragrance 'With Love...Hilary Duff' but decided to include it on the album. The music video was the 'Tinder debacle' years before it occurred, okay not really, but was basically an advertisement for the fragrance. Hilary performed "With Love" at the 2007 MuchMusic Awards (like a Canadian Grammys/Billboard/MTV Music Awards) and won Favorite International Artist.

Hazey's Focus: Hearing this, "Stranger", "Gypsy Woman", and later "Never Stop" cemented me as a fan of hers, so I'll always look back at this era as special, even if BIBO might have taken the crown. Asking me to choose between "Stranger" and "With Love" is impossible as I've always categorized the two together. Interestingly enough, it beat "So Yesterday", "Stranger" and "Sparks" when we did her discography rate, ranking at #7 but not this time. It's not hard to see why I will always consider this a favorite as it jam packed with energy and beats that never let up and a perfectly structured chorus that is so enjoyable to sign along to and never leaves your heart or your mind. It will always be in my Hilary Top 10.

Does this mean you look upon "Gypsy Woman" and "Never Stop more favorably, @iheartpoptarts (6.5)?: "Everyone stans this era but none of my fave songs are singles. Oh well."

@livefrommelbs (8) tells any new listeners what they'd be in for by listening to the album: "This is such a bop. And just a taste of everything that was iconic about Dignity."

Join the club because @unnameable (10) "loved whole Dignity album" too, with @Mina (10) adding that this was a stone-cold "classic".

Nah @Blond (8) I think it's on you because it did reasonably well, certainly didn't flop: "This sounds like it should have been a huge hit but I guess the fact I’ve never heard it before means it wasn’t."

Sounds like @Sally_Harper (8) used to get smashed and lose herself at the club with this on but never really picked up on what song was providing the soundtrack: "All I remembered about this was the blippy noise, which still gets stuck in my head every now and then, but it turns out the rest of it’s actually really good as well! All hail the blippy noise."

I'm glad I did this rate in time so that @Martyn (10) wouldn't forget who they were: "This rate has just reminded how much I love Hilary."

@Remorque (10) reminds us all why Dignity is still often referred to as a top-notch teen-pop album: "Dignity still holds up so well after all this time and that's because the sheer quality of the songs on display. Such as With Love. It's just such a lovely rush and she sounds great on it."

I'll finish with @GhettoPrincess (10) because she nearly called it her favorite in the entire rate: "It always annoyed me how there was no part 2 to that flawless video. Such a tune. Contender for my 11 but just missed out really due to the middle 8 being a bit weak. The production is so good though."

Okay so the iconic "With Love" isn't going to move the needle, huh? Well try this elimination on for size, complete with another 11 going..

For the first time in what seems to be a long time actually, @iheartpoptarts and I get to be the main villains together on one song.

I'm not sure that will happen again in this rate, so let's enjoy the moment!

#17. Miley Cyrus - The Climb - 8.213

Highest: 11 (Sprocky's BF) 10 x 5 (@Alouder98, @Sprockrooster, @Pecans, @Blond, @Charley)

Lowest: 1 (@iheartpoptarts) 3 (DJHazey) 6 (@GhettoPrincess)

Year-End Charts: #21 (U.S.) #84 (UK) #16 (Australia) #10 (Canada) #43 (New Zealand)

Decade-End Charts: #84 (Australia)

Certifications: 4x Platinum (U.S.) 3x Platinum (Canada) 2x Platinum (Australia) Gold (UK)

Release: Single from the EP Time of Our Lives and the soundtrack for Hannah Montana: The Movie, in February 2009. It was the first single from Miley to be marketed to both country radio and pop radio.

Songwriters: Jessi Alexander, Jon Mabe, produced by John Shanks.

Fun Facts: When "The Climb" debuted on the Country Charts at #48 and her father Billy Ray's single "Back to Tennessee" debuted the same week, it was the first time a father/daughter did this since 1990 (Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash). "The Climb" topped the adult contemporary charts which made Miley the youngest to do so since Leann Rimes did in 1997 with "How Do I Live". It was short-listed for a Grammy nomination for Best Film Song, but nobody knows why it was short-listed since it wasn't technically written for the movie and because of that its nomination was removed. Joe McElderry covered "The Climb" as his winning song for the 2009 X-Factor series.

Hazey's Focus: I don't want to hate on the song too much because obviously with this ranking, a lot of people do love it. I think I've literally heard it four times in my life including the time I had to hear for both this rate and her discography rate. It's just not my thing at all.

Again we have a situation where I'm not going to be able to preview the picture I was given as commentary, so we'll let whatever imagery @iheartpoptarts (1) sent me do the talking:

@livefrommelbs (8) clearly won't be upset about this placing: "Deserving of its iconic status."

Yeah not all us of @unnameable (9) as I can think of a handful of motivational songs that the rest of PJ hates and I love: "that motivational bop we all sing along to."

This, this is the hill @Mina (9) is willing to declare she loves cheesy songs from: "Cheesy, but I admit I enjoy this from time to time."

I'll be nice and slide a box of tissues down to @Sally_Harper (9) though: "This song absolutely does me in. Excuse me while I cry for three years."

The only thing in this rate that fits this description from @31entrance (9) is Confessions: "a gorgeous power ballad."

Well well, his boyfriend gave his 11 a 9, but @Sprockrooster (10) managed to do better: "This being my boyfriends favourite songs ever is really making it special for me too."

It must be the one time Sprocky's BF (11) is allowed to control the radio on car-rides: "This is perfect to sing along to. Such a beautiful message too."

I'll end with @Blond (10) because damn he had to go and give us a sweet little moment to enjoy like that: "So as a treat for the end of term last week I asked my teenage students what song they wanted to listen to at the end of class. The girls unanimously chose this because it reminded them of when they were like 6 (which made me feel so old because what the fuck this song feels like it came out a few years ago). They sang every word despite English not being their first language and it was such a genuinely heart-warming moment, especially given the (albeit cliched and cheesy) message of the song."

For me personally, without necessarily having my scores in mind...I'd switch "Sparks" for "With Love" and put "See You Again" in for "Really Don't Care" which I think is the only real anomaly here. Otherwise it's pretty flawless.
