Rahim Redcar (fka Christine and the Queens)

I honestly feel like Christine & the Queens is pretty much the biggest "had it, lost it" case of the last ten years. Going from being one of the most interesting artists in the game to this mix of underbaked, self-indulgent music, terrible visuals and unbearable personality... At least we'll always have those first two albums I guess.

Did you listen to Paranoia, Angels, True Love?

I think the loss of his mother just changed him completely. Probably a world ending event for him, from how he's spoken about it and how it's crept into the music. Add in an ongoing identity struggle and it's clear he's on some kind of artist-as-self-saviour journey that's not always going to produce straightforward pop music.

The last album produced four or five great songs though I think. I'm always just hoping he's... okay.

I downloaded the album because none of you seem to have done – it's rough as fuck and I feel uncomfortable listening to something that's clearly still unmixed demos, but the overall sound world he's going for bangs, with most of them being techno and house influenced.

If he can polish these up then it'll be a great little record.

Any/All
Chris’ first two albums were great in their own right, but the trilogy is honestly one of the most important queer works of art of our lifetimes. It may take us some years to really understand its value, knowing how rarely we see such unique voices and rich representations of true queerness that goes beyond empty paroles of identity politics. I will always respect him for not compromising such a grand artistic vision in favor of serving an easy to digest package (even when there are bops and pops aplenty!) There’s good music and then there’s projects like that one - and we don’t get a lot of them!

After a handful of posts about his not being invited to participate in the Paris Opening Ceremonies, he’s leaked his new (seemingly as-yet-unmixed) album!

It is a shame his live skills weren’t part of this showcase of French culture.

These are very rough but most of the demos have pontential. Hoping he will properly finish and release the album.

These songs are all great and showcase a really interesting sound for him, but they are all clearly very rough. I would love to hear a mixed and mastered version of the album (and an abridged version of the 20 minute song) but I am concerned that this leak might have ruined any incentive for his label to fund a release.

Also, going by the cancelled shows, the disputes with the label, the rants on social media and his obsession with angels... I hope he is doing okay. It is all slightly concerning.

I’m with @soratami in that even if some of the music is still great, the vision and voice that he started with has clearly shifted and it’s led to less success. There’s an insular nature to the work now that while allowing deeper introspection lyrically doesn’t always invite repeated listens.

He’s really the definition of a tortured genius. The interviews of the last album cycle were a bit harrowing, but the ideas were so grandiose and interesting. But there's clearly pain and a questionable mental state there. Especially for him given the French media's attacks and so many comments on his social media misgendering him and calling him crazy. He has the creative type of madness that makes for really great art I think we'll look back on and be amazed by. I just would rather someone not have to suffer to make their art.

Yeah, I've only been able to skim them, but they all sound pretty fucking great. Hopefully we can still get a finished release in the new year.

Paranoia, Angels, True Love was a real artistic statement that, yes, could have been trimmed. The actual abridged version cutting out essential tracks was questionable too but at least it was something. He’s an artist more than a pop star and that’s ok, even if we all want another set of bops. Getting something like Marvin Descending or A Day In The Water is worth losing the bops.
