Random Eurovision Thoughts

Today is the 44th anniversary of Eurovision 1977 in Wembley, where Austria served puppet choreo realness.

Apparently, the delegations of Austria and Portugal were installed in a hotel near Heathrow, separated from the other delegations, because of suspicions that the groups and songs that represented those countries were linked to communism.

Didn't they also scrap all the postcards that featured the performers getting drunk in pubs in London because one country had a minor performing?

I didn't know about that. But which country had a minor performinmg? The only one I can think about is maybe one of Spain's backup singers. I think all the lead performers were adults and even Anita Skorgan was already 18.

Today is the 23rd anniversary of Birmingham 1998

In the backstage doc narrated by Richard Fairbrass, the spotlight went (obviously) to Dana and (surprisingly) to the writer of the Greek song acting like a Karen.

TBH 2001 was meh year for me. Besides Greece, France, Germany, Spain and Slovenia, I can pretty much take or leave anything else.
Sweden copied ABBA and Belgium 1996, Latvia copied Rednex, Norway copied All By Myself, Ireland copied its 90's entries, Croatia copied the Love Boat theme.
And the stage lightning must have had serious budget cuts.

It's weird that 2001 could have easily been the prototype of the modern Eurovision Song Contest what with the stadium capacity and all but other than the audience it feels very 90s (especially compared to say 2003)
