Rihanna - 9th Album

I don't know why but I was under the impression she was much more ambitious than this. Performing is obviously not her greatest asset but one would have expected for her to at least try to put on a spectacular show. It's the Super Bowl, like come on. All she had to do was step up her game for this one performance then go back to her beauty toys and enjoy the universal praise while on her way.

As a matter of pride, I know I would seethe knowing that all I did was look cute and not even open my mouth to properly lip-sync (fail) when given the opportunity to perform on the biggest stage in the world. Factor in the fact that my peers got to truly shine and pretty much write history on said stage and chances are I'd go berserk. I thought she was the same. So... Rihanna seemingly being content with outshining Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake did take me by surprise, I have to admit.

I'm sorry but what? NYT ranking her at #3 only behind MJ and Prince?

3. Rihanna
I’m hard-pressed to think of any Super Bowl halftime performer who put in a similar level of creativity and execution in exceeding the hype. Even with Beyoncé on our list twice, Rihanna truly utilized a Herculean effort to produce this masterpiece.

Rihanna flawlessly navigated her first performance since her “Anti” World Tour. After the performance, she formally announced that she’s pregnant with her second child.

Everything she did was seamless. The visuals were incredible. Even from my couch, I felt like I was in the front row of one of her concerts. The music hit me in the chest. Rihanna danced. She fulfilled her promise to have representation in her performance, using a diverse group of people as her background dancers. Shoot, she even incorporated her Fenty makeup products into the show. Most importantly, Rihanna looked like she had fun. She was meticulous and executed every aspect beautifully. The final shot with the fireworks was the chef’s kiss on this delectable and memorable halftime performance.

It literally is absurd. Like we all have our favourites but most critics and most PJ users, while wearing rose tinted glasses sometimes, at least have a realistic angle to their fandom. There has been a lot of back and forth in this track. I would still think most would be writing a piece that would Rihanna fans here would still put it in perspective a bit?

That is just a stan stanning. How can all of this be published today? Oh well yes. For us to talk about.

I think it just comes down to Rihanna being a person with a natural charisma and innate business savvy first, and maybe... someone who was never 100% sure music was her actual passion and that's totally valid, considering how she was a 15-year-old-girl plucked from obscurity from a small place and basically slingshotted into the major label system that probably put her through god knows what. If she has shifted away to finding genuine enjoyment from that, and also if she wants to prioritize growing a family, then respect.

But the performance felt like a checkmark off the list, not a crowning achievement.

It's a bit like... if you're going to do the victory lap unenthusiastically, why do it at all?

If we're gonna spill some real deep dark tea... imagine being one of the most famous women in the world at 21 (!!!) and getting the shit beaten out of you by your boyfriend who is also one of the most famous people in the world and the entire world sees and dissects the entire thing, and somehow you're resilient and hardworking enough to keep deliver five more damn pop albums all with giant smash hits without like... fucking dying honestly. You know what the fuck that level of fame can do to people, and she's almost unfazed and always uniquely cool.

Rihanna absolutely deserves respect and a kiss on the ring. But like... I wish she seemed like she was even enjoying giving the world a chance to kiss her ass, you know?
