Rihanna - 9th Album

The only reason I wouldn't be irritated by this song wasting some of the 'comeback' hype is that I'm not sure she'd have put it out unless she knew it would be another while for new (proper) solo music anyway? My first thought when I heard the soundtrack news was that it meant we probably weren't getting a proper new era until a while after the Super Bowl. Similar to Beyonce's 2013 strategy.

Basically I'm thinking/hoping this will be more a 'Be Alive' before 'Break My Soul' situation, rather an 'Ooh La La' before 'Work Bitch'.

It’s very linear and there’s no momentum happening, but it’s… cute. It really sounds hand-tailored for some type of “In Memory Of” moment, her Oscar performance is confirmed!

I get it being frustrating as a “comeback song after the drought and the seven circles of hell!!” But in a commercial view in the streaming era… don’t think it’s even that concerning. Can see it as a “hey it’s me… remember I used to sing?? Hehe” before pushing cylinders with her own music.

Now if said music isn’t coming before SuperBowl….

It's not just that it's just boring...it's also bad. I understand wanting to be a part of this particular soundtrack, but to waste your return hype on such an undeserving song is a shame. People are treating this like her return, no doubt about it. I don't think it'll necessarily play out like Rise --> Chained To the Rhythm did when the lead eventually comes (not that Rhythm bombed by any means, but that's a whole separate conversation), but opening up that possibility was dumb.

Wondering if this is gonna hit #1 somewhere just by sheer power of the comeback. On social media the song is getting dragged too so maybe the GP is not on board?

Well I love it. Not a "proper" comeback single sure, but a very nice ballad and I think she sounds lovely. While not reaching the heights of Cold Case, Roulette, Unfaithful, or Stay this is still easily one of her best ballads.

Regardless, the experience of hearing her voice left me more emotional than expected. At first because of Chad but then because I thought of the ANTI tour, the Loud era, Rated R and all the memories with friends (and alone) that were sound tracked by this wonderful woman. All the years I grew up listening to her voice and how much it shaped my tastes in music and me as a person. I didn't realize how much it meant to me until just now. I'm just so happy she's finally back.

If you see the song for what it is which it is a soundtrack tribute song to Chadwick Boseman and not as a comeback single for Rihanna then you appreciate more . I like the song and she sounds great on it !
I get your point but it's just that the marketing angle for this is heavily emphasized on the latter so...

She released a bad “comeback” song so that we’d actually appreciate the real comeback banger even more…mind of a mastermind.

Yeah, I don't think this was the right move and it seems like it's being dragged across the board. The soundbites about people hearing it before it was confirmed were all about the surprise of having her back without any mention of it being good so I figured it wasn't going to be anything to write home about.

Hopefully she releases something good prior to the Super Bowl.

I'll be honest, this was a one-time listen for me. I doubt I will ever want to give it a second chance. Hopefully music not related to a soundtrack will be on its way.
