Re: Rihanna - Rated R [Album Discussion]
Hmmm, on my first listen I'm not blown away, things improve greatly from Russian Roulette onwards but I'm not immediately sold on the first half or blown away by the album as a whole.
A few notes:
- Wait Your Turn still doesn't feel like a single but as an album track I do quite like it, even if it doesn't quite sit right so early in the tracklisting.
- Hard seems promising but is let down by a disappointly weak chorus.
- Stupid in Love is ill-fitting, cringe-worthy and feels a bit like Unfaithful pt.2.
- Russian Roulette is still amazing! And from this point onwards I felt like the melodies and production became more memorable and interesting.
- Fire Bomb is a breath of fresh air, still dark while refreshingly soaring.
- I'm not convinced Cold Case Loves justifies its 6 minutes run time
- The excessive swearing feels a little try-hard.
- Whether it's my cup of tea or not, I give this album props for representing a progression and growth in Rihann's sound and for feeling like a cohesive body of work.
