RIP Amy Winehouse

This is genuinely a sad moment for me. I always thought that Amy would one day get better and produce an amazing and honest album, or at least be forever in the background of the pop landscape, drunkenly hurling oh-so-true-it-hurts insults at those who deserved it and recording that elusive 3rd album. Her death was a shocking, albeit not surprising, conclusion to a colourful life that was promising to be something really special.

She really was incredibly talented and a true character - one that doesn't come along everyday and one that I think will go on to be appreciated all the more after her death. *sadface*

Horrible news. I wasn't a huge fan per se, but she was undeniably talented and I can't help but think that we never got to hear the best she had to offer. Her two albums were still very good, though. Her death is very sad and at the same time not shocking at all. RIP Amy.

The poor girl. I'll always remember her being front page news with a picture of her passed out alone on a bench at 9.30am.. I just thought why is this girl doing this to herself and why is she alone.

R.I.P.

Looks like Amy could finally nab the US top spot if Back To Black keeps selling like this. And Frank could even have a new peak position.

She's in every top ten on itunes: http://www.apple.com/euro/itunes/charts/top10albums.html

YESSSSS! more love for Frank please! I want new peak positions everywhere!

I'm surprised Back to Black is selling so much however Frank isn't in any of the top 10's. I suppose its because people only really know her because of the material from Back to Black.

Frank actually is in the Top 10 here in the US, but on those charts it isn't showing up. There's probably some country restriction or time block on those charts.

The ones on Apple's web page only updates once every 24 hours, I believe.

I'm glad the media has been fairly tactful about this, so far at least.

nevermind

I really appreciated what Gaga said about Amy's impact on pop music.
She was the one that made the "ugly" look "cool" to the general public. She's the one that made "hard-partying" look appealing to the general public.
Without her, there wouldn't be Just Dance, I Gotta Feeling, TiK ToK, etc.
And thanks to her, mainstream is now obsessed with "freaky" imagery.

She really was the first great artist of this century.

Oh Miss Amy no, no. Not logged on in so much time but god girl you got me postin' tributes. I hate I am here and doin' this. RIP Miss Amy. Girl, you had the blues *and* that soul.

Did Gaga really say that? Milk. Seriously, I know we are dealing with a sensitive topic here but does Gaga really have to cling onto everything as her "inspiration"? She must be the worst girlfriend ever.

Sigh.

She said:

'Amy changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.'

Well, it's not the first time she speaks publicly about Amy anyway. Back in 2008 Gaga admitted that she went blonde because people kept saying she looked like her.

Here’s what she told AOL back in 2009:

I will always have a very deep love for Amy Winehouse. She’s a different kind of woman. I don’t believe that what I do is very digestible, and somehow Amy was the flu for pop music. And everybody got a little bit of the flu and got over it, and fell in love with Amy Winehouse. And now, when more flu comes along, it’s not so unbearable.

The girl ain't milkin anything, so please stop the cynism.

Urgh, let's leave Lady Gaga (and petty point scoring in general) out of this.

And can't we all relate to "feeling not alone because of her"? That is a great description of what made her music so amazing to so many people, the things people have posted in this thread are a testament to that

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the tribute on the front page is so wonderfully Popjustice. It's incredibly simple, but deeply effective.

Well said, RJF.

I came to PJ when I heard the news and saw the perfect eulogy.
