Róisín Murphy - "The Universe" + Hit Parade (Sep 8)

I figure it makes sense to have a new thread since this is impending.

Everything we know so far:

-The album is due to start up in “just months”.
-The album is produced with DJ Koze and was worked on alongside Róisín Machine from 2018 onwards.
-Róisín said the album will be unexpected to her fans.
Well, wait till they they hear the next one [album] – it’s gonna fucking do their heads in again! The next one’s gonna be big in America. Trust me. Because it’s so raw and modern and fucking beautiful. You know, it’s just a momentous record.

The people who’ve heard it are really interested in it, so I think it’s gonna be a bit of a smasher. It’s gonna blow your mind. It’s a whole other world. It’s fuckin’ tops down, LA… bouncing up and down on the cars. Hold tight!

I think the music that I’m doing with Koze now, for the next album… there are bangers on it, but even when they’re bangers, when they’re up at 120 BPM, they have something about hip-hop in them. Everything I’ve done with him does... He’s mad, mad brilliant. And then I’m a bit of a wild card... But because of that, it’s the most pop music I’ve ever made, ever. But it doesn’t mean that it’s at all compromised by that; it’s lifeblood.

More than anyone, he makes my voice an icon. It wouldn’t matter if I sold two records in my whole career or 200 million, he wants me — he wants the sound of my voice. It’s all about his ears; if he doesn’t like it, he has to get out of the room. If he’s in a club, and another DJ comes on and he starts playing ordinary dance music, Koze’s gotta get out of there, he can’t. I really appreciate how much he loves my voice, he really does love it. And he prioritises it in the mix — everything has to be built around it, like a couture dress.

Sometimes - like when I’m working with Koze on the next album - it’s hard to have laser focus (on one sound), because it’s an experimental process. It’s a completely modern, sharpened process. He has modern preoccupations about hooks that aren’t necessarily in a natural song structure.

So far it’s totally unique to anything either of us have ever done - it’s not like stuff Koze usually does - it’s not like stuff I usually do. That’s all I can say about it.

That snippet from Instagram sounds so glorious!!! I can't wait for this.

It’s also worth mentioning that she said back in October the album was 80% finished and she only needed one more studio week to wrap it up - I guess they’re basically done at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar rollout to Róisín Machine with a de-facto lead in the spring and the album later in the year.

I’m super intrigued to see where she takes this one visually, especially after the Róisín Machine album shoot.

I'm still being knocked out daily by 'Something More'. I can get so lost in that track. It's a whole mood and her voice is just perfect, I've been trying to hunt down an acapella or an instrumental to listen to the details of the track but I'm having no luck. I just hope the new stuff gives us a few similar dark, sexy sounding tracks. The first video posted above definitely sounded full of promise so I'm excited for more dance/disco Róisín.

Ready for this! Roisin Machine is great but I was hoping we got full length mixes / unmixed versions of the album tracks. Oh well!

Based on her PRS interview, I assume the Crooked Machine remix album with Parrot will be coming first, followed by this starting up in the next couple months.

She (once again) confirmed she and Koze were working remotely on it and nearly finished. It seems the reggae stuff she was talking about last year might be cropping up on this one since it seems to be with Koze.

“I wrote a really great track last week… it’s got fucking oboes on it,” she joyfully exclaims from her Ibiza bolthole, where she’s currently riding out a portion of the pandemic wave. “I said I wouldn’t do disco again, but I couldn’t turn it down. It’s just an amazing arrangement.” As well as this top-secret new piece, she’s also been working with production maestro, DJ Koze, on music that’s steadily approaching completion. “The people who’ve heard it are really interested in it, so I think it’s gonna be a bit of a smasher.”

Finally, the delightfully effervescent songstress once again bursts into a glorious show of colour when recapping on the new music she teased with at the top of the conversation. “It’s gonna blow your mind,” she purrs. “It’s a whole other world. It’s fuckin’ tops down, LA… bouncing up and down on the cars. Hold tight!”

There's a very Sly & Robbie sound to this so all may not be lost.

Forgot, was somebody able to grab the 1.42 min of demon lover? It was shown as a stories last year, said the track was ready (Seiji) and it sounds kinda reggae, wonder of this one would finally make into the album.

If it sounds like anything remotely Grace then her “my fans won’t expect this” comment goes out the window because every Roisin fan knows Grace is one of her biggest inspirations.

This one? She originally said the reggae project was separate from the Koze album last year (although that could have changed since she’s mentioned doing reggae a few times since).

Either way she also said Demon Lover wouldn’t fit on the record so I don’t think it’s popping up anytime soon unfortunately.
