S Club 7 - RIP Paul Cattermole <3

He/Him
I tried to find Polydor's contact information so that they would finally put the album out for streaming in all the countries and unfortunately I could not find any way to talk to them. I even sent the band's Facebook page a message and of course I got no response.
Feel like we've been screwed and no one will help us with this
A lot of the licensing to Polydor expired. Their catalog is with UMG but XIX seem to have a bigger hold of it. It would be worth contacting XIX.

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of any of Tina’s solos (Stronger is probably the most overrated S Club song going) but Secret Love is probably my favourite. It’s a moody little bop.
I don’t particularly love Stronger either. I got the promo vinyl yesterday though and the Flip N Fill Remix pops off. It makes me love the song.

Secret Love, I’ll Be There and Discotek are better than Stronger for me.

Probably been talked about before but aside from Bring The House Down and Stronger, were there any other definitive almost singles that we know about for sure?

Show Me Your Colours was supposed to be a single. It has a handful of TV performances, more so than an album track would get.

But with You being delayed due to them getting a second children in need single. It kind of all went strange after that.

They had quite large gaps between singles didn’t they? Don’t Stop Movin’ was released in April 2001 followed by Have You Ever 7 months later in November. I wonder why they didn’t chuck out a single say in the summer? Especially as it was from the same album campaign.

You and Alive were 9 months apart which must’ve felt like ages back then!

As much as I love Alive as a song on its own, as a single it is their weakest and lacks uniqueness. They tried to make a copy of Don't Stop Movin and the result was very pale.
I always thought Dance or the legendary Gangsta Love should have been the first single instead.
What is even more strange was they chose to release a dancey song close to the Christmas period so it is strange that they not release Straight From the Heart as a double a-side with Alive.

I’ve given this way too much thought but indulge my nerdiness. Basically, I’ve a&r’ed their new album.

If I were them, I’d be going for the uplifting, carnival, house dance pop feel. Not EDM, dance with a bit of rhythm to it, so modern disco I suppose. The whole thing would feel like a celebration, genuinely fun songs, that are just beaming with sunshine (lol) and euphoria. Then I’d sprinkle in a few more mature pop/R&b mid-tempos and one or two classic, big, shameless ballads.

I’ve scoured my library and I think these songs all have an “S Club in 2023” vibe (more in terms of vibe, not necessarily lyrically).

Louise - Straight to My Heart

This song completely sums up what I have in mind. The minute I heard it I was like “this sounds like a modern S Club song!”. It’s upbeat, euphoric, but it’s got that definite funky R&b warmth to it. This would be an absolute dream. It’s such a feel good, crowd pleaser of a song.

Justin Timberlake - Can’t Stop The Feeling

I’m well aware of what people think of him and this song, but you can’t deny, this is essentially a modern day Reach. Something like this which is undeniably pop would be amazing. The double chorus is a winner, and it’s incredibly well written. It’s got S Club written all over it, and if they had something this calibre it would be amazing.

HRVY and Matoma - Good Vibes

On paper, this should be naff but it’s so carefree and funky, there’s so much to enjoy. I think the fact it’s written by MNEK, somebody who just GETS pop is what makes the difference. It’s uplifting, but it’s got that harder, funkier bite to it. This would be a Paul/Bradley duet in an ideal world.

This is Heaven - Nick Jonas

This isn’t suitable lyrically but I could see this closing an S Club concert and it being magical. This gospel pop feels like a natural successor to midtempos like Let Me Sleep. Again, it’s euphoric and uplifting, and emotive, like all the best S Club songs.

Sigala - Feels This Good

I heard this on new music Friday and it clicked. It’s definitely more dance than other songs I have in mind, but again, it’s a genuine, feel good pop song. Sigala is great at these sunny, party bops. I can just hear Jo and Bradley all over this.

Dancing On a Sunny Day - Benjamin Ingrosso

This would be a Jon song, without a doubt. It’s a nice change of pace, to be more of a guitar, MOR type song, but again, it’s sunny and sparkly, like loads of great S Club songs.

Kylie - Magic

Again, this is just a classic, effortless pop song that leans more towards the funkier, disco vibe. Feels a bit obvious but this would be a flawless Rachel inclusion, and it fits alongside the more uptempo, disco-esque songs.

Zara Larsson - Look What You’ve Done

Another modern disco banger, with that sparkly, twinkly feel. Tina would be all over this.

Mabel - Let Love Go

This fits perfectly alongside the previous two songs, and has that cool, effortless, swooshy disco vibe. Another Rachel song.

Bruno Mars - Too Good to Say Goodbye

This is a bit out there but bear with. Basically, nobody does BIG, proper ballads any more, that break your heart and revel in the emotion. This is the most recent one I can think of, and although the production is definitely more classic soul than I would say suits S Club, the melody has shades of them throughout it.

Honourable mentions:

- Katy Perry - Birthday - Bit old and maybe “dated” now, but it’s so carefree and fun, S Club could nail it.

- Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling - Not 100% sure this feels like S Club, bit more 80s, but it’s the most euphoric song of probably the last decade, so it’s hardly a bad choice.

- Modern day versions of All In Love Is Fair, Show Me Your Colours, Never Had a Dream Come True - These are essential S Club songs but I can’t find modern day equivalents so I’d lock Cathy Dennis in a room and get her to write them.

Loved your whole thought process. Thank you for this post!

I think you've perfectly surmised how S Club would fit in today's musical landscape. We are very lucky that music has spurred itself into this direction (ie. funk, rnb, dance, tropical, feel good vibes) because that's what their sound was (with a bit of the early noughties thrown in).

I’m in no way implying the clip of Take Off they’ve put on their socials is remastered

But it’s the best I’ve ever seen it? Probably the original TV broadcast version in 576p
The ones I have are ripped from the VHS
The DVDs were officially released in France. So we know it's at least in DVD quality since back then. But hard to tell if it was anything more because of Instagram's compression.
