Everything seems to be pointing to the 'category swap' one.
He does get the worst category usually, but that is in part due to his awfulness as a mentor.
Even the year he won with Shayne Ward, he was awful with song choices, and despite being the huge favourite, Shayne "only" won by a percent, against one of the dullest finalists ever.
He was an awful judge that year too.

I really really don't like Janet, she makes every song sound the same. Or Amilia, her voice is average but she knows how to make the best of it. I hate the way it sounds tight when she tries to go high. He range is quite limited.
This year is probably worse than 2007.
I'm rooting for Kitty and Johnny. At least they're funny. And Johnny can sing fairly well.

He is a terrible mentor anytime he gets the groups he tries to turn them into Westlife. He tries to turn every female into a cross between Barbara Streisand and Susan Boyle. He needs to get stuck with the Circus freaks he picked and let talent actually prosper without him. He would ruin Misha, Amelia and all the groups.
I've always found the distribution of the categories quite strange, to be honest. Poor Tulisa having to watch over so many people in her first year!
I would have given the girls to Tulisa and the groups to Louis (or, if it had to be one of the new judges, Gary and Kelly would have been the better options), the boys to Gary and the overs to Kelly.

But it's not solely his choice - the producers have a say in who goes forward or not. We all know this show is scripted to an inch of its life, and it's fair to say Louis gets the worst lines - to follow the metaphor - repeatedly. I think he does the best he can with it; clearly someone who's willing to mentor John & Edward or Wagner has a sense of humor.
Louis really is nothing like how he comes across on this show - he has a great sense of humour and he's aware of how silly it can get. I actually think, out of all the judges, you'd have most fun with him at a party.
The judges are perfect for their categories now though! They are so personal how they picked them so if they swapped I'd be raging.
