Sailor Moon

Unpopular opinion that I find the random urge to speak upon: Linda Ballantyne was the best original voice actress of Sailor Moon even though she had moments where you could tell she was struggling to go higher. The serious scenes/any scene where she got emotional or had to speak with more urgency and conviction was on point.

Hey, guys! As someone who missed out on Sailor Moon during their childhood and has recently become interested in its lore, where would you recommend I start? I wouldn't want to invest too much time in watching everything, and I'm not sure if the latest movies are the best place to begin immersing myself in this world. I literally know nothing beyond the basics, so please don't judge me; I was always more of a Cardcaptor Sakura fan.

I would definitely go for the 90s anime or the new edition of the manga.

You could start with the following if you don't want to invest in watching the 200 episodes of the original:

- Sailor Moon Crystal seasons 1, 2 and 3 (about 40 20 min. episodes in total)
- Sailor Moon Eternal movies, part 1 and 2

These will get you up to the penultimate arc of the series. The Sailor Moon Cosmos movies that conclude the story aren't yet available outside of Japan.

Or you could go straight to the source material and read the manga, in its "Eternal" editions or online.

I think the only reason Crystal was recommended was because the poster asked to not watch all 200 original episodes. It's the only way to get the full manga story without reading it.

In theory I agree but what’s the point of getting invested in a poor man’s version of the story?

I found some joy in Crystal for sure, and the tighter storytelling is appreciated at times, but Sailor Moon IS what it is because of the 90s cartoon, all ridiculous 200 episodes of it. I definitely recommend watching that first!

I’d recommend reading the manga first. It establishes the characters and the plot at a steady pace and lays a foundation that leads to a better understanding of its lore. The original 90’s anime does a good job at diving into those established characters, but some of the plot changes are.. a choice. Certain arcs are completely made up and not original concepts by the author, and those arcs are where the series dips. The ending of the series is vastly different as well. Crystal is a little inconsistent in terms of quality, especially the first 2 seasons, but becomes more aligned quality wise with the third season and the following movies. You can tell Sailor Moon isn’t a huge priority for Toei unfortunately. They care more about marketing and toys than delivering a proper “reboot” of the series.

I think in short, @SHYGUY you should just take the time to watch the original anime. I think there must be some sort of guide for which episodes you can skip, making it shorter.

Or what @flapjack- said!
I was going to say the same. I’m sure there is a guide somewhere that’s like “here are the important and very good episodes to watch” that would probably whittle the 40+ episode seasons into 16-25ish.

That was the main reason but I actually quite enjoyed Crystal and think a new fan should defitnely give it a try - I personally liked seeing the manga in its animated form.

Thank you for all your quick responses. I think I'll go with the original anime following the list that @Heretic posted, it seems very clear. I'm here for the original anime, but I'm not sure about the filler.

Got it, I'm familiar with Toei's abandoned children. I'm a fan of Digimon too ddd

He/Him
I'd also potentially recommend starting with the Sailor Moon R Movie if you already know the establishment of the Inner Senshis. However - the first season is so full of joy I'd have a hard time telling you to skip any of that fff

Crystal is mostly trash. Season 3 is decent, The Cosmos movies are alright (though not available on streaming yet) but it lacks any of the heart of the 90’s.. PLUS the animation for the first two seasons is amongst some of the worst I’ve ever seen. The writing also sucks and there’s little to no characterisation for anyone who isn’t Usagi.
