Saint Etienne

Their 'What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?' soundtrack will be released in October. Even though it has not been THAT long since Tales From Turnpike House was released, it seems like the Etienne have been gone for yonks.

I watched Almodovar's VOLVER last night at the cinema and was delighted to hear 'A GOOD THING' played in full in one of the scenes. I trust the film synchronisation licence brought the Etienne some well-deserved dosh. Also - good to know that Almodovar is a fan...

Funny this should come up - I had 'Heart Failed' CD on earlier.

They do have some obscure B-sides.

I was reading that the two guys (Pete & Stan?) are working with some kind of youth musical group at the moment.

Pete 'n' Bob.

Sarah's duetting with Marc Almond on his new album, too. This makes me quite giddy with excitement.

Lipslide was so wonderful - I loved GOLDIE. It would be great to have a new Sarah solo album. It is likely to sell no more than about 9 copies but hey - it's all about the music.

It never seems that long between Saint Etienne releases. We only had the 'Nice Price' compilation a few months ago and now the 'Mervyn ' soundtrack.

I'm not complaining, mind. Anything from the band is welcome.

Lovely track from the forthcoming release is up on the MySpace page, but I guess any Saint Et fans already know that being the obsessives that they are.

I didn't know about Sarah's involvement in the Marc Almond album. Two of my favourites for the price of one. Nice.

They've announced a residency at the South Bank Centre, the first night of it is September 28th, and has a "Festival of Britain" theme according to their official site. It's taking place at the Festival Hall. Wish I lived in London...

I bloody love Saint Etienne, me. They're my favourite group. I like that they're moving in an artsy direction, but they're not pretentious. Did anyone else like "Finisterre" (the film)? I think it's terrific. I must stick it on again tomorrow.

I await everything they do with great anticipation.

Hey all,

Anyone know if the classic Glasto interview with Pete & Sarah from the band -where Pete is off his face - is online anywhere? It was from the early 90's, can't see it on you tube and with google I can only find a transcribe!?

Any ideas?

Pffft. Any group that can come up with the majesty of Tales From Turnpike House/Up The Wooden Hills 20 years into their career has certainly NOT had their day.

Bollocks of the highest order.

Firstly, technically speaking they have not had their day yet (in terms of the commercial success they deserve) and, secondly, as jsd points out, a band that has had its day does not release a masterpiece of the Turnpike calibre after such a long time in the business.

I certainly don't want Saint Etienne to disappear yet, I've loved them for years and they are never afraid to try different things, they are vastly underrated. Now that I've got into the 60s girl groups and singers I spot a lot of St Et's reference points.

has anyone actually ordered the mervyn day soundtrack?

im a little skeptical because i think it may just be instrumentals...

I saw Volver a month ago and was so happy when the scene came on that Good Thing features, I did a little in the chair dance and all. Almodovar just gets better with every movie, doesn't he? Saint Etienna are big in Spain, wasn't Shower Scene (PIJ vol.345) released there as a single?

I love Shower Scene, it's my favourite track on Finisterre, also love Almodovar, but I haven't seen Volver yet. I believe Good Thing is played in its entirety, I like it when that happens in a film, rather than a snippet of a song so that it qualifies to be on the soundtrack. I remember some BBC police drama had Only Love Can Break Your Heart played in its entirety, it was great. Don't think I'll bother with 'What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?' though, I'll wait until the next proper album, or Dame Sarah of Cracknell solo stuff, whatever comes first.

But I'm a Cheeleader featured "We're In the City" in its entirety. I love that when SE music makes it into a movie, it's not just in dribs and drabs!

Ironically, the movie for which they did the soundtrack, Misadventures of Margaret, wasn't nearly so kind to their contributions. If I remember correctly, most of it was edited out.

Oh God yes, for me it really rekindles that magic they had with He's On The Phone.  Like, for those who are really just casual fans such as me, it's so exquisite a reminder, especially since Sarah was made to coo on tracks like these.  I'm loving the song Stars Above Us, too, so I might just catch up at some point.  If this song doesn't make you feel better then maybe nothing will.
