Saint Etienne

Just had my first listen. I really love it. I think we all knew it wasn’t going to be full on bangers so I went in prepared. It’s really dreamy, quite ambient. Some lush melodies and harmonies. Not really any beats, folky, fireside vibes. Experimental but a lot more captivating than the last album. It’s a vibe actually - Sarah sound great, she’s singing a lot, talking passages. Proper vocals not samples. Some Boards of Canada feels on some songs. A bit soundtracky, a bit Midsomar. It’s exactly what I wanted and very cohesive. I know I’ll come back to it a lot but I’ve always loved this side to them.
It’s comforting and disarming at the same time. It’s unsettling enough to stop it being twee at any point

At the risk of sounding like a flop fan, is this the new album, just available as a limited run on their website on vinyl or is it some old recordings? Is there likely to be a streaming release or on CD?

It’s the new album, there was a st Etienne website release but the vinyl and cd will be available elsewhere. You can order now but it’s released next week

Oooh just realised, it’s all quite The Boys Scouts of America in style

It’s funny that when Half Light was released before the album I thought ‘this doesn’t sound like a single’ but having listened to the album it’s the closest thing to a single on there, along side Preflyte possibly. Will they release any more singles from it do we think?

From one listen, I think it’s a nice little collection. Never thought I’d say it but I think my favourite tracks are the instrumentals as they hit the bands brief of ‘music to fall asleep to’ most. Sarah’s spoken word interludes are gonna jolt me out of my slumber state though!

I need to spend more time with it but I still kinda think of this as a fan club curio rather than ‘the next studio album’.

Alone Together is a gorgeous closer, perfect way to end the album. Probably my favourite track on here.

I think an edit of The Nightingale would make a good single. The whole album is like daydream. It’s really great. I’ve already listened to it more than the last one. Sarah sounds better than she has in years. It does feel like a fan club curio but that’s of them when they’re at their best. It’s probably pretty high up there in my album ranking
