Sam Smith - Gloria

People are just hateful people on social media.

If anything this is the first time Sam has been allowed to fully be themselves, so I say go for it.

Yeah, the stuff about Sam's appearance is gross. It does make me happy to see them living their best life and seemingly more confident than ever I just wish it wasn't with a song/package this absolutely horrid when they've proven they can serve with actually great material

I really don't get the hate for the song here. But then again, I think I'm Ready was one of my post played songs of 2020 so what do I know.

Sam brought Kim out during the Jingle Bell performance and it was all sorts of tragic.
She couldn't even try to begin to lipsynch correctly:

It’s giving First Time on Stage - and not ten years in the business (in Sam’s case at least).

I love that Sam is definitely feeling themself these days and it is a shame that they're being bodyshamed for it, but I think the comparison of Sam and Harry's looks is a false equivalence. Yes, they're both sequinned jumpsuits, but they're very different sequinned jumpsuits. Sam Smith is one of the biggest popstars in the world right now and deserves better stage wear.

Yeah, the body shaming against Sam is awful. If they want to drag them for anything, drag them for being a lowkey terrible person that keeps awful company instead. They got off very lightly when it came out that their entourage were literally shouting abuse in a woman's face on a night out because she said hello to them. Sam stood and watched a group of gays call a woman a bitch and tell her to shut the fuck up, the woman even said Sam rolled their eyes at her and laughed it all off.

Allowed? This isn't communist China. If Boy George could be himself forty years ago Sam could’ve been theirself anytime they wanted.

Sam has made choices that have have somewhat affected their brand over the years.

This. The online scrubbing of their early years, their initial straight-baiting crooner image and spectacularly cringe ownership of gayness at the Oscars etc. (completely lacking *any* awareness of who came before) is what prevents many from connecting with them now. Nothing to do with their body/fashion choices - everything to do with them dialling queerness up/down when convenient.

Holding this against Sam or holding it up as an example of a "choice" or some act of self-sabotage feels really off to me.

It's weird how you assume labels are always totally OK for their artists to be out and proud too. I'm pretty sure Sam's label and/or management would've at the very least had "advice" about how to present when they were starting out and didn't have a fanbase yet. This shit is still happening in 2022, never mind 2012 when Latch came out.

Yes it isn't communist China, but then again not everyone is that comfortable to come out and be themselves. I have a feeling it's taken this time for Sam to be able to fully express himself, despite the negativity that they have been receiving of late.
