Sam Smith - Gloria

I like Sam's new song and video - I'm not here to make friends.

I cannot see it repeating Body Water's (TikTok boosted) success, esp. in the USA but who knows.

Kudos to them for facing their biggest fear - offending the Tesco mums. There’s a reason why they scrapped the original Love Goes artwork and the Gloria one being what it is, so it’ll be interesting to see if they will choose to double down or dial it back.

Dd plenty of subpar pop gets forgiven or embraced on here on account of who's singing it.

Sam constantly has to clear some kind of hurdle just to earn some civilised discussion. We're harder on them for whatever reason (possibly because they don't match everyone's image of queerness, and people love to project) than most of the women Popjustice stans, many of whom get an easy ride, and I don't think that's contentious.

So to say the critical discussion of Sam stems entirely from the forum wanting the best pop music possible rings untrue to me. (Lose You is a Diamonds-tier banger and barely anyone can even be bothered discussing it...)

The video has really bought out the secret homophobes / transphobia on my twitter feed.

Don’t think they kicked off at the Wap song and video like this.

I remember being 12 when My Neck My Back come out. It’s nothing new to have overly sexual music songs and videos. Just this time it’s a non binary person enjoying their sexuality with men and women.

There is honestly a lot to be said about the fact that a lot of the hate (that I can say is coming from cis white gay men) is directly stemming from the fact they are not sexually attracted to Sam and had ANY cisgender white twunk been in the same video with the same settings, styling and storyboards, they would be lapping it up as a serve.

It has nothing to even do with the song and the video is so sexually tame, it’s laughable that is the rhetoric the press and twitter is spewing. It’s about the trans joy and body positivity emanating from this video.

I'm a casual fan at best of Sam's music (outside the bop Disclosure features), but it's the joy I feel at witnessing someone continue to lean into and celebrate their queerness in a way that seems authentic.

You are spot on.

Fact. You know if Harry Styles did this the general public would be pissing themselves with enjoyment.

So much of it comes from the fact that Sam has embraced their body at multiple points, and them experiencing joy and comfort directly opposes modern white-gay standards of "my personality is the gym", "I only gained weight to be a bear", "I'm now thick but still conventionally attractive", etc. So many cis white gay men (including white Latinx gays) rest upon a thinly-veiled adherence to specific visual goalposts, and Sam not adhering to those ideals while finding joy and still minding their business is a reminder that being content with oneself doesn't look one way. It absolutely threatens their own construction of identity, and for them to attack Sam says soooooo much more about them, than anything about Sam's own comfort.

We need to pin this to the top of every page of this thread!

I have never listened to much of Sam's music, but this video made me smile and the more positive trans & non binary visibility the better.

I disagree. I often find that this forum is much more critical of music that the general public are lapping up.

To add on to this, I was thinking while watching the video, I wonder if a lot of them see Sam and think "do I look like that?" whenever they think they're serving or whatever and feel they need to lash out and think, certainly not them. As a fat dude who likes to get the fuck down, you see expressions of joy and movement from bigger people and it's often played for laughs as opposed to serious and it's nice to see the music video take Sam doing choreo...uh...straight-faced as opposed to something to wink and laugh at. Do I think Sam could hit the moves a little better? Sure, but also, I'm a bitch that doesn't have a record label contract that wants to fund my music videos.

People are allowed to hate a song/video but speaking as a fat gay man who spent my entire life feeling disgusted by my own existence, I will always feel like fatphobia & rigid ideas of gender expression are the #1 reason people drag Sam. I don’t think many realize what it’s like to feel so ostracized from your own community because brick-faced gym gays don’t think you’re fuckable. I’m only now starting to realize how idiotic my own thought process was & how I have every right to be a messy gay slut who has just as much fun as the rest of y’all.

I may not love the music, but I support Sam pissing everyone off. It’s a great way to find out how people really feel about certain members of our community.
