Can't believe there's no thread for this, just a couple of comments.

Apple TV+ brings us this amazing musical comedy with a star studded cast including:
    • Cecily Strong
    • Keegan-Michael Key
    • Kristin Chenoworth
    • Alan Cumming
    • Ariana DeBose
    • Dove Cameron
    • Jaime Camil
    • Aaron Tveit
    • Fred Armisen
    • Ann Harada
    • Jane Krakowski
    • Martin Short
As well as an incredibly talented assemble of performers:

Co-created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, the show features a plethora of catchy songs all written by Cinco himself.

The series ran for just six episodes between July 16th and August 13th.

Taking inspiration from Brigadoon and other golden age musicals, the series surrounds Josh & Melissa, two New York City doctors who's relationship has fallen flat. On a couple's retreat they become last in the woods during a thunderstorm and cross a magical bridge to Schmigadoon.

Here they find they are trapped in a real life musical and the only way out is to find true love which they fast discover they don't share for eachother.

  3. It’s the year’s best show. As I’ve already said, hilarious, incredible cast and genuinely great songs.

Cheno’s 4-minute single take musical number is truly Emmy-worthy.
  4. What a great little show this was! I really hope we do get a second season. They did such a good job with the songs making them entertaining but keeping with the old school traditional musical theme.
  5. This should have been right up my street, and for large parts it was, but it just missed the mark in so many places.

Cheno’s Ya Got Trouble spoof for example feels neutered and lacklustre, certainly it lacks the sparkle she usually brings to everything she does and it sounds like she can barely keep up for most of the song. It makes me want to revisit Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s take instead, which although it isn’t as big a production or even as tongue-twisting, captures the essence and energy of the what they’re trying to homage much better.

The characters didn’t feel fleshed out enough for me to really invest in any of what is happening and the break neck pace by which characters underwent entire personality changes was at points laughable, even if it were meant to be a commentary on how in musicals the motivations and feelings of characters change after a single song.

I think it would have benefitted from being 2-3 episodes longer to allow it to breathe really.

There was one resounding success though…

THAT is how you do a homage to a classic musical theatre song!

  6. Aaron Tveit is one of my favourite Broadway actors so i tuned into this and really liked it. Glad to see him getting some good roles on TV.

  7. The trimmed episode order will have contributed to the rushed feel.
  8. Corn Puddin’ best song of 2021, no it’s true it’s true.

I found it cute but the 'character breaks into song while main character rolls eyes and comments on every line' was very Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and also got old quite soon, it could have been funnier and I was sorta hoping for a twist. The story was.. well pretty much everything you saw coming from episode one on.
But I guess it's really more of a tribute to all the old musicals (I don't know too well) more than anything

  10. This was a chore to watch. Jane Krakowski was the only saving grace.
  11. I liked this! It was very cute and I actually enjoyed how short it was. That being said, I wish it had other leads. When the entire supporting cast is better than the leads you clearly fucked up the casting. Keegan had 0 charisma, Cecily was better but doesn't really scream lead actress as well. And I agree that the whole gag of Keegan's character being annoyed by the musical numbers got old by the end of episode 1.
My main issue was how uninventive most of the musical numbers were shot. So many steady shots, felt very low-budget.

  12. This was really great. Part of me loves that it was a tight six episodes, but at the same time Keegan and in particular Cecily’s character development felt really rushed up to the finale, and I would have liked a bit more time with some of the other townsfolk, so it would have definitely benefitted from an additional couple of episodes.

A lot of deserved love for Kristin Chenoweth but I also thought Arianna DeBose was a standout.

I’ve got no idea what a second season would look like but I want one nonetheless.
