Selena Gomez - "Single Soon"

This made me so irritated walking to my office this morning and I never want to hear it again. Super annoying chorus, especially.

I'm mixed on this. On one hand I like this better than the stuff on Rare and I'm so glad she is finally back making fun music. But on the other hand this song sounds like it was produced in 2013 and her vocal sounds thinner than usual on the track. I'll give it to her as a small win I suppose.

I feel like this might be down to the vocal not being super corrected? At least that's how it sounds to me. Her songs are usually littered with ghost singers and whatnot, especially if there's bigger notes, but this sounds wholly her. Like that bit at 1:12-1:17 is so shaky and thin and I feel like it would have typically been fixed. It does sound a bit like any demo she could have recorded between 2014-2018, which obviously it was, but it doesn't seem like they went in and updated it at all after digging it out of the vault. Part of me wishes they threw on a vocoder or something honestly to liven up the performance a bit.

This song exemplifies the thinness of her voice. When the melody calls for her to push her voice or exert some power, she pulls back. You can hear her retracting inwards, if that makes sense. It's so hard to unhear. Not that this song requires a ton of force but it's so half-hearted.

Yeah, that is true, there doesn't seem to be any ghost singing or real backing on this track so her shakiness is more prominent. It seems like this was quickly produced and put out without the typical engineering put into her older stuff.

It really sounds like she gave one take and said "we got it, right?" which I feel like is a common problem for her and what frustrates me about her output. It just seems so minimal effort.

It bops, and I actually think her vocal during the verses works really well? I like that it doesn't feel over processed. She's also having such a great time in the video - it definitely sells the song. Hopefully this indicates the next album will indeed be more fun.

Whoever said it feels like a later single was correct, almost like a third piece next to Bad Liar & Fetish. That original iteration of Rare and everything she recorded around 2016-17 was good. Now, let's dig up more demos more similar to Fetish.

It's fine but I don't really understand the point of just throwing this out there without leading into anything. It's not very exciting for a standalone moment - it's giving soundtrack single for a flop romcom.
I definitely think they're trying to keep momentum going after Calm Down became such a success. All signs were pointing toward the album being slated for the fall, so if it truly isn't done than this is a move to keep her profile active.

I'm sure if it does really well it'll end up on the project anyways.

I don’t know if her voice has somehow regressed or if it’s the lack of supporting players to mask her inabilities, but I’d go as far as to say this is the worst she’s ever sounded on record. Like genuinely off-key at points and barely there at others.

Like somebody at least had the sense to ensure Charli was left all over ‘Same Old Love’ and, when you think back to the yelp leading into ‘Bad Liar’s middle-eight, you know it didn’t come from miss Selener’s lips but somebody knew it was needed and made sure it was present. This, on the other hand, feels like it’s actively getting worse the further you progress into it and realise all the elements it needs are nowhere to be seen and they’re never turning up.

I find the comments about Selena sounding off key on this really funny. She's not, but the verses do have a really unusual melody and phrasing, and sound even more jarring when the more "normal"-sounding chorus appears. I actually find the song cute in its (unintentional?) weirdness. The sentiment behind the lyrics combined with the uplifting, supermaket-type music is so awkward it's charming.

Having said that, I don't see this doing much for her. It's got gigantic flop written all over it.
