Severance (Apple TV+)

He/Him
I’m watching and really enjoying it!I just finished the latest episode. I’m so intrigued by the whole concept of the series and wondering where it’ll go. It’s nice to see Ben Stiller producing and directing something special. It also seems to be one of Apple TV+’s more well received series, freshness wise.

Watching and absolutely loving this. It has shades of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, one of my all time favorites, so I was on board immediately. The cinematography is exquisite, evoking A24… and that stunning, hypnotic intro! It feels fresh and zeitgeist-y in a way no Apple show has before now?? True appointment television, which is a first for them.

I’m so glad this is airing weekly so I can’t be tempted to binge. Something as thought-provoking and engrossing as this feels like it’s designed to be digested slowly + discussed around the watercooler, a rarity in 2022. Apparently season two is already underway, so we should be in for quite the ride. What’s everyone’s theories on the data they’re organizing?

I was pretty disturbed by the video Helly’s “outie” sent back to her when she tried to resign. How could she possibly make herself return?! There’s gotta be another factor at play, like she’s there for an important reason we don’t know yet. I’ve heard some theories that she’s secretly some kind of higher up or exec for the organization. Or maybe she’s some kind of spy? Anyway…reading the Reddit of this show is quite fun for the rabbit hole of theories.

So happy to find a thread for this show. I'd heard such good things so I resubscribed to Apple TV and it's been worth it. Echo everything about how unsettling and gorgeously shot it is. It has an addictive absurdity to it and I'm glued. Honestly have no idea what is going on, especially the -

Goats!?

This week's episode felt a bit short/filler-ish, but

the scene at the beginning of Irving and Burt... I don't know if it's the way they shoot this show, and I don't know what this says about me nn, but the sexual tension between Christopher Walken and John Turturro (which is a sentence I never thought I'd ever write) is being handled SO well.

I thought they were going to keep the "romance" as platonic as possible, but Burt mentioning lip-to-lip contact makes me wonder if they're actually going to go there.

This week's episode felt a bit short/filler-ish, but

I felt the same was and was wondering if it was just the fact that it's the first ep I've watched live. But yeah the more I think on it the less happened.

This to me in the most compelling question at this point. There's no way it's a simple dissociation thing going on with her like Mark.

I just assumed it was a deepfake ddd.
I'm not too crazy about the cult aspects the show appears to be leaning in. Also didn't they reveal the severance procedure can't be reversed? So are the employees expected to just work there until they die? Like they can't quit or be fired at all?
So far this reminds me a lot of Sam Esmail's Homecoming, another aesthetically gorgeous show.

Although it is a slow burner I think they’re playing it smart by not, for lack of a better term, blowing their load right off the bat. It’s giving more than enough to compel you to keep watching, but still space digest the material in more reflective and meditative way. I think it’s also smart to be a weekly release show, because it allows a fan community of theories to build which keeps everyone on their toes.

I am curious to know when we will learn more about the outside lives of the other workers, but this week did give a small preview of it - so I imagine more is coming soon. But I could also see them saving a lot of that for Season 2.

What a weird thing for Ben to tweet like stick with us for another 10 episodes to enjoy it more ddddd.

I'm enjoying it despite not having a clue what's going on.

Episode 7's twist...

That was WILD. I expected the wife to be Helly but what they went with is crazier. So they made her a full-time severed employee?
Is it safe to assume reintegration is not (officially) possible which means Christopher Walken's character was... offed?

WHAT a twist, I gasped!

I'm a little confused though because the security guard didn't show up to work because he was killed in the outside world, so how was Casey able to get to work if she died? Or do we not have that piece of the puzzle just yet?

And I hadn't even thought about that re: Christopher's character! Noooo. I was moreso trying to figure out if retirement was some kind of punishment, but then they played the video of his outie...

Man there are so many layers to this show, it's absolutely wild. I'm already depressed that we only have two more episodes this season, I don't want it to end!

I suspected the wife might be alive because of the questions Cobel was asking his sister but I never imagined it would be Casey. I think Lumen might have staged her death to make Mark sever. Why, I have no idea.

Great show!

My interpretation is for some reason they decided Casey must not ever leave that office building, obviously she can’t be seen in public because she’s dead to the outside world. And he only accepted the job to escape from his grief, so they must’ve needed that extra push to convince him to join? No wonder they keep such a close watch on him.

Ooh the cliffhanger this week. I can‘t wait for Friday. The wait for season 2 will be torture! I hope they have a clear plan for how many seasons this is going to be but based on the quality of writing so far I think they know what they do.

This show really is spectacular on a quiet, intimate, measured scale. This weeks ended on one of the best cliffhangers I've seen of any show for a long time. As with everyone, I have so many questions and fantasies about what may be going on. Too many TV shows these days tell us (or scream at us) as the viewers what we should think, how we should feel and where to look, but this simply leaves the field wide open and encourages us to take our minds for a walk, entertaining the myriad possibilities created by revealing remarkably little.

Credit to the brilliantly cast actors who are all fantastic in bringing life, nuance and high drama to every word, every glance and every pause. With relatively little going on, it might be hard to invest in these characters, but the way they are presented has me wholly perched for what happens next.

There should be nominations if not awards being dished to Severance in the year ahead.
