Shawn Mendes - Shawn

This is "dropped from your label" bad, I think. Hope I'm wrong as I do find him likeable. This era already seemed to be operating on a reduced budget compared to Wonder.

I mean 4K only in the Uk is a disaster, and the album is already out of the top 100 this week. By comparison the Weeknd does double than that every week with the streams alone of his The Highlights playlist lol.

Well, sure, but apples and oranges.

Weeknd is one of the hottest acts of the moment, while Shawn almost too quietly released a personal album without any hits or radio-friendly songs.

He looks like a Disney prince and his voice is like caramel, so on paper it was not a heavy lift to reposition him after a break.

However this album commits the most egregious sin of giving a popstar songs with no hooks, but also no real depth or sonic departure to at least hide behind it being “personal” or “experimental”. It satisfies precisely no one and I am always so fascinated how many people had to have greenlit it knowing it was probably dead on arrival.

I'd say he's had enough success in the past to be given another chance, if he wants it. Just with the label 'encouraging' him to write songs with actual hooks.

They must have known as soon as they heard any material from this that it was fucked, but I guess as it had already been a 4 year break they just wanted anything out as possible. Seeing as it was all recorded in the woods with the same small team of people it would have been fairly cheap at least.

Shawn's first week positions/sales in the Billboard 200:

#1 - 119,000 - Handwritten
#1 - 145,000 - Illuminate
#1 - 182,000 - Shawn Mendes
#1 - 89,000 - Wonder
#26 - 24,000 - Shawn

By the way the physicals of his new album are 30% off at the EMI shop (excluding bundles).

These sales are abysmal, and hopefully give him the kick in the butt he needs to course correct his material. That said, he remains one of the most famous male singers today, and while that may have more to do with his looks and interest in his personal life than his musical output, he'll be given numerous chances to recover.

Finally got around to listening to this and it's a very pleasant, cohesive listen, even if a bit uneven and at points not super inspired. Kinda feels like the male counterpart to Gwen's latest, for better or worse. I will say though that Heart of Gold is really excellent and probably the best thing he's ever released to me.
