I would argue If I Can't Have U and Señorita is where everything went wrong, despite them being hits. That's when he lost the identity he had been forging for himself in favor of... whatever he's being doing since. Being a Tommy Hilfiger model, I guess.

His whole career was always hanging on the huge hits that he seemed to effortlessly collect. The moment they stopped coming it was over for ha.
Also I believe that at the beginning he was presented as this fresh-faced, precocious, "clean" young man as opposed to the rotten male solo singers of the time, who were all turning out to be deeply unpleasant (Bieber in chief) but let's be honest, you could throw a stone into a Christian campfire singalong meetup and you'd hit at least three guys like him.
He was never unique or interesting. The Camila farce also didn't help him at all, the whole thing was cringe for even his fans.

He seemed to ride the wave of being cute and popular with teen girls for a good while, and never really formed his own identity outside of that. Things seemed to finally be coming together with In My Blood but then the wheels fell off and he's stuck now. He's unlucky in a sense that, despite being a very handsome guy, he is very vanilla and "hot guy who rocks a pair of Cavins" are not exactly a rare breed. There's not enough for him to stand out from the crowd without a solid musical identity.
I hope he can find his way though, as I am a fan, he has talent, and does seem like a perfectly decent guy (with shoddy taste in women)
It's a rare and special thing when a relationship kills both careers involved.
