“Matt & I explained our idea and it how it would all work. We invented the concept of a studio group which didn’t “gig”. Matt & I were the band. When we explained the idea to Pete (Waterman) he understood it straight away.

Meeting Pete Waterman was a blessed relief. He immediately saw the potential of our plan. “The Upstroke” only reached No 60 in the charts but it did well in the gay clubs. This was good news because by this time the gay clubs and discos were where new acts and records were being discovered. The gay community had become a powerful force .

Our idea was to make a dance record that would suit what was then called Boy’s Town music and later had become known as Hi-NRG. We knew exactly what audience we were aiming at”- Mike Stock “The Hit Factory

“We make gay records. There’s no question of that and we’re not afraid to say it. The music I heard in those clubs was “up”. Everyone was dancing but I twigged what was wrong. The records they were playing were cheap and nasty. I knew I could give them exactly what they wanted with quality”- Pete Waterman

It was a simple plan but it proved very lucrative, the trio went onto dominate the pop charts of the mid and late 1980s scoring 13 Number one singles, 29 other top ten singles and a further 47 top forty singles (included in this rate anyway). By the time 1993 rolled around the partnership had dissolved and the parties went their own ways giving us such acts as Robson & Jerome, Scooch, Steps, and Deuce in the 90s before reforming for occasion work in the 2010’s.

By the time of the cut off for part 1 of this rate (December 1988) they were the most successful production team of the 1980s generating 35% of the top 20 best selling singles of the year and giving us the biggest selling singles act of the year and the best selling album in Kylie Minogue, not to mention the biggest selling edition of “Smash Hits” EVER with Kylie & Jason on the cover.

But enough of the history and onto the music, in this rate (comprising 232 singles over two rates) comprising 1984-1988 and then 1989-1993 we’ll delve into their music legacy where actual instruments were banned from the studio (probably) and "A Linn" was the only drummer allowed! For the inclusion criteria I’ve looked at tracks produced directly by the trio, those on the PWL label and those produced by the PWL “b team” of Phil Hammond/ Ian Curnow/ Phil Harding during the period 1985 up until they left in early 91 and where the main radio edit was a PWL one. I’ve omitted the remixes of “I Want You Back” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There” because who needs those eh? And we’re counting only UK single releases

    Rules Of The Rate:

    - Give each of the tracks in the rate a score out of 10- half points are permitted (though NOT 10.5)

    - Comments on each track are strongly encouraged and will add greatly to the enjoyment of the rate!

    - You may score one track 11 to show that it truly is the best song ever to grace the chart (or something like that)

    - You have until 19th December to submit your votes (gives you time to make your way through the “unfamiliars”)

    - PM the results to me

Please don't reveal your results until the rate is over

It’s time to watch those old TOTP clips and immerse yourself in shameless pop a la late 80s…

  7. I'm not sure what you mean?

To create a hyperlink to a video via a word (or even a picture/icon) all you need to do is type [ u r l = paste url ] before the word and [ / url ] after the word.
