Shygirl - "Heaven (feat. Tinashe)" + Nymph_o

Wait is this something different from Nymph_o entirely? I assumed the latter was the remix album she'd mentioned before, holy shit

Yeah, she mentioned on Discord that they're different projects. As far as I'm aware, Nymph_o is more or less her version of a deluxe edition for Nymph retooled with some features and a couple new tracks, but they all largely stick close to the originals like the "Heaven" collab with Tinashe. "Thicc" is for Club Shy, which is supposed to be a full on remix album/mixtape thing. She said in an interview that she was looking to move back into upbeat territory again after Nymph era.

So I just heard Nymph_o! It’s a great companion to the OG album. I don’t see any of the collabs topping the originals for me, but they’re nice to have if you maybe wore Nymph out and want a fresher take on it. Nothing too drastic, but enough of a change. I definitely appreciate her approach to not just make your usual deluxe album here, though.

Some notes on the highlights/new tracks:

“Crush” with Erika De Casier is stunning. Sounds like an early 2000s Utada track. Fits perfectly alongside “Heaven”.

“Woe (I See It From Your Side)” is an all new Björk track that repurposes Shy’s chopped up vocals into the instrumental. Easily the most surprising thing here, for me. Very eerie and cold. Kind of reminds me of Vulnicura?

“Playboy / Positions” is a bop. Basically “Nike” at the strip club.

Also, I initially said I didn’t really think “Unconditional” had a place here, but I changed my mind after hearing everything together. It is seemingly the same as the released version from 2020, but it functions well as an epilogue of sorts.

Tinashe’s vocals and additional melodies on Heaven are stunning. It would make the original redundant if Shy’s verse wasn’t cut.

@mindtrappa thoughts on Angel? The USB version was just a demo right? Honestly I love how thoughtful and intentional this “re-release” feels.

“Angel” is good! It’s the version she’s been performing recently. I would say it’s more of an intro vibe, and it is longer now.

@mindtrappa Your descriptions of "Crush" and the Björk mix of "Woe"... you have to be kidding me, the way I got goosebumps from descriptions.

I hope they live up to my words dd. I think they do, personally. “Crush” is genuinely so sweet, and “Woe” just sonically reminds me a lot of what Shy said about being consumed by love. It’s dark, sexy, and scary – almost in direct defiance to “Crush”.
