Sky Ferreira - "Don't Forget" + General Discussion

I guess that's true. It just absolutely sucks that everyone seems to see how speical she is apart from the people gatekeeping her. Well, they obviously do know, because if they didn't think she was worth something they would've just dropped her. I think they fear her going to an another label (indie or major) and becoming successful, so they are trying to bleed her dry until those offers would've dried up. It makes me so angry. The industry is fucked up.

People still believe the record label is the one to blame when Sky is practically unwilling to work / make up excuses constantly... there really is a certain level of delusion and masochism (pun intended) some fans are willing to go through in order to make up excuses for her.

The same could be said for the people that are almost eager to put her down in weirdly personal and passive-/aggressive ways whenever there's even the slightest suggestion of sympathy from anyone that she could, shock horror, actually be having label problems!

Again, none of us know what the deal is for certain, but what on earth do some people think she actually would have to gain from "making it up" for close to a decade now

Surely if the problem was purely her, the label would have just dropped her ages ago?

(I mean you’d think they’d have done that anyway, but makes more sense they’d keep her when it’s their people that are the problem… I think)

Honestly people still believe it's the record label's fault?

I'm a huge fan of her debut, and so far only, album, but let's face it she's not serious about her career and it's tiring with all her excuses by now. Seriously one song every third year because she's a "perfectionist"? Do people really buy into that?

It's sad though, I'm one of those who patiently have been waiting for a follow up from her for years now and I actually really dig Don't Forget (eventhough she doesn't break any new ground with it let's be real, but still a good track fitting her "brand"), but by the looks of it I'm not sure we will ever get a second album.
Isn't it more fair to move this thread to the "comeback" corner?

Sky doesn't want to work it's pretty apparent, no video was ever shot or an album recorded, let's not fool ourselves right?

I mean you can go home if you’re not having fun.

I would also note that the way the label is managing the whole thing has been weird, it did look they were at least, partially on board with the release of Don't Forget and then... nothing.

While it has not been the first case of a label being messy and the artist... not being exactly 100% on the right (I remember Azealia claiming that one of the reason the label needed a hit, was because she sort of blew up her budget recording for BWET, which obviously put more pressure on the album having to do well, which I don't necessarily agree with it, but I can understand a bit the reasoning behind it), it's the complete silence and some malicious choices (didn't they take Sky's SoundCloud away?) that I think makes it obvious that whatever Sky did, and at worst I can imagine her being someone who is a perfectionist and perhaps a bit messy (which I feel a lot of artists are so...) feels disproportionate. I am a bit tired of Sky being accused of being a liar or lazy, and (luckily) not over here, even worst stuff, I mean sure over the year she has teased stuff and then lied about it (which created hilarious content on this thread), but to shift the blame only on her, when the label is definitely pulling a lot of shady stuff against her feels simplistic at best and malicious at worst.

I fully believe that she is picky, wants to work only under specific circumstances, and may even give up easily when the conditions she finds herself in are not to her liking, but honestly? Same.

i think this is more than likely true, for me i think that the problem is sky has been shelved and delayed so frequently, it must have affected her work ethic and belief in her craft at numerous points, so everything that she works on has to be perfect, otherwise she thinks it will be scrapped and cancelled again.

It’s a weird situation. There are definitely many angles to it that have already been pointed out. I do think she is a perfectionist (hello fellow Cancer) and that is partially why we don’t get more from her. I also think that Capitol is handling her music rather poorly and have since they first signed her. Especially when they wanted her to be a certain kind of artist and she wanted to go in a different direction. It seems as though Capitol is still annoyed that she didn’t want to go that route and has held it against her since. I do wonder if she’s unwilling to compromise to a little, which can sometimes benefit the music a bit. The same way a comedy sometimes has to work around a rating to make a joke land.

Then again, if this was a male artist, it’d be treated completely differently and they’d be praised for holding out against the label. I hope she manages to get something out soon as she makes great songs. Apologies for the wordiness, I was on a walk and listening to 24 Hours... I also desperately need Descending in my life.

It's been very foggy and gloomy in the Scottish Highland's as of late and Downhill Lullaby has taken me in an absolute chokehold. Listening to it while walking alone at night was an experience. At this rate, I almost hope Masochism is a trippy psychedelic rock opus because she nails this soundscape. I want her to start a shoegaze side project in an act of rebellion.

I wonder if the release of Don't Forget was contingent upon her saying she would finish and deliver the rest of the album (maybe just the other planned singles like Descending) and then the label never got what they asked for so they scrapped the video and then iced her back out.
