“We tell ourselves stories in order to live.”

As the 60s drew to a close and those famous words were written, Joan Roberta Anderson was already making history. She was doing it under a different name, one that was still only four years old, but with the release of her second album it was one that was about to become something more than just famous. It was a name that was about to mean something to people.

Last summer I wrote thousands upon thousands of words about Joni and her contemporaries, about their lives and the stories they told. This time, we’re looking closer, picking apart the forty-year career of the greatest writer of all time. Joni’s songs are novels, paintings, masterpieces of rhythm and time, and that I get to share them all with you is so special.

THE RULES

1. Score every song 0-10. You can give two 11s if you complete both sections, one to a song from 1968-1979 and one to a song from 1982-2007. If you only complete the compulsory section, you get one eleven.
2. Please don't take the piss. Not every album here is going to be to everyone's taste and we'll discuss why some Joni albums are so divisive, but there's nothing that would deserve an average of lower than 5. She's the greatest songwriter of all time -- read the lyrics, get to know the songs.
3. Commentary for your eleven(s) only. If you participated in my last rate you know my eliminations tend to be long anyway, so I'll have enough to say for all of us. It keeps the thread moving too.
4. The rate is split into two sections to make it easier for you all, but if you have the time and the inclination I urge you to complete both sections. This is a career spanning rate and the more people who listen to the second half of her discography the better our overview will be. Some of her best work is there!
5. There are some songs here that deal very explicitly with themes of sexual abuse and domestic violence. If you're concerned about this, drop me a PM and I can give you a list of the songs in question.
6. The songs with a strike through in the list above are not being rated, but please do listen to them to get a full sense of their respective albums. For Both Sides Now this isn't necessary as it's a jazz covers album, but you can decide for yourself.

I am so excited for this and to get to binge on Joni for the next month.

Also I'm a huge fan of the Geffen years (and Turbulent Indigo) and I hope they aren't done too dirty.

Turbulent Indigo has grown on me massively since I started the prep for this. I have some thoughts on it I’ll share when I do the 90s overview but it houses one song that I think is amongst her top 10.

My body is ready! Excited for this @Lila - though I think entertaining the option of letting the gorls swerve the second half of her discography is being too lenient! I suppose if it gets more voters...

Are .5 scores allowed?

Definitely! I’m hoping people do the second half anyway because it’s where the closest thing to bops are I guess ddd

Count me in! The way I might have close to 10 averages for certain albums, which isn't surprising considering the abundance of flavor that's right there. On another note, thank you for giving us the option to have as many as three 11 even though I'll still struggle picking them effdsijfodsjf

It’s just the two elevens! You get one per section.

I relistened to her whole discography this summer and got familiar with lots of those 80s and 90s albums for the first time. SO. I’m ready. And the additional 11 after 1982... will not require much thought so I’m celebrating that.

Not that I mind but just wondering what the logic was behind those two songs being the only ones included from Both Sides Now?
