#soon! Part Un - The 60s-00s Girl Band Debut Breakthrough Rate

He/Him
So, Soratami was defeated by Filippa in Round 1.....

What is he to do next against the Rate Villain?

Some reinforcement in the shape of Sprockrooster and Conan may be the way to go!

So an epic battle 3 against 1 ensures.....

Unfortunately the trio were not expecting Filippa's 100% Damage Show Stopping Finishing Move

As Filippa looks over at the three she just slayed, whispers to them: C'est La Vie!

Danity Kane – Show Stopper
Average Score: 5.854
Highest Score: 10 x 3 (@Conan, @Sprockrooster, @soratami)
Lowest Score: 0 x 1 (@Filippa)

And you thought I was kidding when I said Filippa runs the rate...

Oh gosh! We are up to this elimination! This won’t make me many friends but let’s do this!

I gave Show Stopper a 6.9, which is one of my lowest scores in the rate already but listening to it again now for this write-up I wish I has given it much much less!

Let me start by saying Danity Kane have the makings of greatness, with many talented vocalists and a cohesive look but this song – with the faux swag and strange tonal inflections at the end of every sentence in the verses, trying overtly to prove they are cool? Sexy, No No No!

The other thing that works against this number is the lack of identity this delivers as a debut for the girls. Compare this to The Spice Girls’ Wannabe or The Sugababes’ Overload – there is no need with either to actively place the name of each member at the beginning of the music video or to name drop every brand in the book – why, you ask? Wannabe and Overload are full of personality and charm – the audience is engaged and happy to discover these themselves; furthermore as it was I forgot the girls’ names seconds after they were on screen... At this point we are well within the 00s and with all that girl bands have achieved by this stage, why was this not picked up by P.Diddy and as a result Danity Kane given a better number to begin their career with?? Clearly the connection to Making The Band saw them achieve success but it’s not even a better song than Poison from their fellow rate competitors (who got their start on television) Bardot, I am afraid to say!

Now I don’t mean to sound like a party pooper to the Danity Kane fans, I love (hate to love/love to hate – not quite a 10 due to the painful to my ears ‘Do you got’ instead of ‘Have you got’ grammatical horror show) Damaged – one of the rare American girl band songs of the 00s (that I am familiar with) that pack drama, emotion, polished looks and a killer chorus! I had no interest at all in them with Show Stopper, but Damaged made me think they could go somewhere. Unfortunately the end was around the corner before that could be explored properly.

I wanted to give you a brief history of their short lived career but check out their Wikipedia page and see for yourself! One big achievement they have to their name though is that they were the first female group in Billboard history to debut their first two albums at the top of the charts! Now that’s an achievement, isn’t it?

Not what did the other roasters have to say?

DJHazey (6) gives a kind score but it’s not all good news - I don't know why I don't remember this more than I do because I swear I watched a ton of the show they came from. I'm just finding myself chuckling at their 'swag' style and how over the top it is. Just confirms I never missed much by not getting into their music. Unnameable (4) isn’t happy to diss DK himself so turns to another – whenever I think of Danity Kane, I think of Kaitlin Cooper dissing them in the OC. Iheartpoptarts (2) steals the words right out of my mouth! - This is a LOT of things I dislike about mid-00s production in one song.

DominoDancing (5) is being extremely generous with his score considering his comment - Does nothing for me. Baby Clyde (2) not generous in score or commentary - (WTF is this shit???) Londonrain (3) likes the band, not the song - Cherish did this sound about ten times better. DK has done WAY better than this.

One of only two (yikes!) positive comments comes from Sprockrooster (10) Danity Kane – Glad to end this playlist on a high after three mediocre tracks. Way to shade Booty Luv & The Saturdays!

Empty Shoebox (3) found nothing to love - Too much random shouting in this. Too much product placement, and that man's just terrible. Trouble In Paradise (3) is the definition of blunt - I really don’t like this song. Filippa (0) doesn’t mind kicking DK when they are already down - I don’t like it.

Saviodxl (5.4) has a good and a bad - Oh, how I wish it was "Damaged" here instead and I'd give it a 8,5 or more. ComeOnGloria (5) comes for another part of the song - Those lyrics!? Oh dear... Kermit_The_Frog (4) sees the positives - I adore Dawn Richard as a solo artist. I adore Lemonade. I adore Aubrey O’Day on CBB. This? Not so much - a bit try-hard and insincere… Zar-Unity (7.5) is not doing his reputation any good stanning this but hey, I am apparently a Michael Bolton stan around these parts so who am I to judge? - Sly, sexy and always full of colorful production and fresh vocal styles. Tech: 4 Taste: 3 +.5 = 7.5 points
