Exposé – Come Go With Me

Average Score: 6.687
Highest Score: 10 x 1 (@soratami)
Lowest Score: 3 x 1 (@Filippa)

And another 80s number bites the dust! It seems we are getting to that part of the rate where the lowest scores are not quite that terrible anymore, even rate villain @Filippa awarded this track a 3 as opposed to the usual 0 for numbers she hates. On the opposite corner is @soratami whose victory with eliminating Shakespears Sister was only short lived. Exposé has the distinction of being one of the harbingers of that ‘Freestyle’ sound that eliminees Cover Girls and Sweet Sensation (as well as Seduction, not part of this rate) rode in on so it is satisfying that they outlasted the rest.

Come Go With Me is certainly a fun little number and quite a bop! Unfortunately it pales compared with Point Of No Return, which sadly did not qualify for the rate as Come Go With Me hit the top 20 first with its #5 peak on the Billboard chart. Come Go With Me has a fun 80s sound, also combining that freestyle sonic experience with the instrumental changes, most of which are through that keyboard riff. This certainly gives the track a bit of a signature sound within the list, however it is also as a result a little more experimental and less polished than what the band and the genre would achieve later. The vocals (not exactly great) and ‘sing along’ quality of the number, while makes it quite an earworm also show a lack of depth which possibly is what prevented the voters from truly connecting to it all.

Exposé are also quite the interesting girl band considering that by the time of Come Go With Me’s release and their debut album, they were already on to their second line-up, without a single original member still being part of it. The first line up were apparently all fired due to lack of star power! They did all come together as a side project of Lewis Martinee (a Miami disc jockey and producer) who just wanted to form a dance-based group for more commercial gain, so they were never the most organic act in the group. They continued to have success over the years, including a US #1 hit in Seasons Change until more drama came about with band members and their label dropping them in the 90s.

I will not go too much into the group’s history with this one as we could be here all day discussing separate aspects, including Gioia Bruno’s vocal chord troubles that prevented her from singing for a number of years or the backstage drama of the members being paid only $200 per show – definitely check out their Wikipedia page for all the goss. Billboard named them the eighth most successful girl band of all time, so don’t discount their impact either!

PopJustice - what did you think of this one??

Unnameable (5) takes over from ComeOnGloria as the new @Mina – mediocre. I wholeheartedly agree with Iheartpoptarts (9) and it is my pick for part 2 unless anyone disputes it convincingly - ‘Point of No Return’ is the ONE though. DominoDancing (7) does more clocking! -I really like the instrumental, but the vocals add nearly nothing of worth, and the chorus is pretty weak.

LondonRain (6.5) get his Zar-Unity on with the score not quite matching the comment, but pretty close! - A fun little bop but it feels a bit underpowered and there isn’t much to it outside of that chorus. Empty Shoebox (6) may or may not be here for more - Another that I hadn't heard before. I don't think it charted at all in Europe. Solid 80's pop I guess. Apart from the unnecessary key change. Filippa (3) doesn’t actually like this but isn’t cut-throat either - It’s not bad but it gives me a headache. So sorry this is not for me.

Saviodxl (7.6) is into the history, and this is the second line-up - Which line up is that again? I keep forgetting the member names, although they're a solid girlgroup. Since 'Point of No Return' was re-released, could've been this song in the thread, right? BOP – I wish, savio but for reasons mentioned above, it isn’t so… ComeOnGloria (6) doesn’t quite do the Mina this time - Generic 80s fare. Kermit_The_Frog (5) is content knowing just this one - I like this, though it falls short of the HIGH standard set by everything before it… doesn’t make me want to investigate further… Zar-Unity (7) likes it overall for nostalgic reasons - I'm playing a old 8-bit video game, then the voice come in. Tech: 4 Taste: 3 = 7 points
