Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Hana

I love how airy and soulful the vocals are - reminds me a lot of Corinne Bailey Rae. The melody is the verses is so good - a new direction for Soph! The chorus is an absolute win! From the 3 songs that have been released - it's clear to me that Ed and Sophie want to showcase her melodies and vocal abilities on this album.

I think I understand the "kaleidoscope" reference better now. There's are so many styles on this album. Loving all of it! So far, Wanderlust was her best in the trilogy for me, but it seems like Hana might just outdo Wanderlust! I wonder if there's something dark and dramatic on this album.

She's 3/3 for me as well. I think if you're expecting Murder on the Dancefloor Sophie then you'll be disappointed but I'm loving this style and it feels like she has really evolved over this trilogy of albums. I agree that her vocals are at the forefront and that should always be a big seller for Sophie. It reminds me a little of Is It Any Wonder from Read My Lips.

I think this is probably the first project of Sophie’s where I’ve been extremely underwhelmed by everything that’s been released before the album drops, I’m really sad to say I’ll more than likely be avoiding this era altogether.

This is gorgeous

I've loved all 3 singles actually. They might not be f*gbops, but they're great songs.

I took the liberty to type out the lyrics for anyone looking:

Lost In The Sunshine

The faded colours
In the light
I feel no one can touch us
We're alright

I'm gonna take a moment
Breathe it in
Not just your image, baby
Warmth on skin

Scent of flowers
Taste of blue
All my seasons
You

Let's get lost in the sunshine
And give ourselves to the summertime
An afterglow in clementine
And now the heat is growing

Our blanket covers
The greenest grass
And it's so very tranquil
Let it last

As the ice is melting
Sun overhead
A breeze to shake the branches
Nothing said

Scent of jasmine
Taste of blue
All my seasons
You

Let's get lost in the sunshine
And give ourselves to the summertime
An afterglow in clementine
And now the heat is growing

We're getting lost in the sunshine
Margaritas by the riverside
We're gonna let the hours slide
And keep the good times going

Forever always in my mind
I go there when I need to
Forever always in my mind

And when I need to lose some time
You're there when I reach for you
Forever always in my mind

Let's get lost in the sunshine
And give ourselves to the summertime
An afterglow in clementine
And now the heat is growing

We're getting lost in the sunshine
Margarita by the riverside
We're gonna let the hours slide
And keep the good times going
And going and going

This is so good. Lovely, melodic, feel-good with a slight wistfulness. Some people clearly only want synthpop from her and that's fine. But weak these singles are not. This is shaping up to the best album of the trilogy by a distance.

For sure but also I think some of us are more than happy to have her branch out and doing something very different as well but these songs sound like a continuation of the last 2 records.

Indie Sophie is just as fun as synth/pop Sophie but the songs this time around just don't grab me in the same way as something like Young Blood, Love Is a Camera, Crystallise or Wild Forever did. I'm holding out for the album because I'm sure the clips she previewed sounded a lot more interesting.

Ultimately, I just don't think Ed Hardcourt excites me much as a collaborator for Sophie.

Song is pretty but the mixing is still off. It sounds like like you're listening through some cotton pads and I don't believe it's intentional at all.

I've really enjoyed her last two albums. I don't even remotely expect her to do synthpop all the time. I simply don't think these songs are particularly strong or interesting. They're like what we've had from the last couple of albums, only less. It has absolutely nothing to do with them not being synthpop. Ok?

Why are you being so shady as if I quoted you specifically dd. I didn't? Also you're the one telling people their "sounds great in the sun!" verdict is desperate/bullshit.

I don't mean to put you on the spot, but it's nice to see others say this. Indie Sophie is pretty damn amazing! As is disco Sophie, rock Sophie, orchestral Sophie and pretty much every other version of her that we know.

I feel bad for Sophie that her new songs aren't getting as much attention as they should here - hopefully most of you who aren't enjoying these find something you love on the rest of the album. All 3 songs are definitely growers (although they have been instant to some of us). Stylistically, I think Everything Is Sweet and Lost In The Sunshine are closer to Read My Lips / Shoot From The Hip, than they are to Familia and Wanderlust.

The new songs represent Sophie at her melodic peak! She has grown immensely as a vocalist and there's no doubting that at all! I think she'll choose a COMPLETELY different sound for the next album, but I hope she carries these gorgeous melodies with her to whatever she chooses to do next. I'll happily take some of her icy deadpan (and cold electropop), if she returns to it - but I'm loving these soulful vocals (and gorgeous instrumental arrangements) for now.

I love indie Sophie but next album should be all dance mode.

I doubt that Richard X, James Ford, Stuart Price or James Greenwood are that expensive.
