Specific Songs or Albums That Deal with Death of a Loved One?

  1. A lot of Tori has been mentioned already, but I'll add this track because it's an emotional one but in a more comforting way...

  2. I'm sorry to hear about your Mum. When my Dad passed away it was funny as he was never a real music lover. I have always somehow 'found' songs that spoke to me to help. Robyn's 'Stars 4 ever' was released on her album about 2 weeks after he died. It helped as it had lyrics like 'I can be right there next to you no matter where in the world you are' like he was sending a message to me.

Did your Mum like certain music? Maybe playing some of her favourites might help and see more of her and who she was as well as keeping a part of her still with you. Obviously if that's something you're ready for but it might be a comfort at some stage.

  4. She really does death well.

  5. Dare I say 'Stay Another Day' by East 17. Famously about the death of Tony's brother, the lyrics are somewhat more thought provoking without all the Christmas fluff around them.

  6. I'm sorry for your loss and agree music has that quality to envelop us and connect in such times. One artist who did that for me (but can be quite a challenging listen at times and not for times when something cheery is required) is Toni Childs. Some of her work explicitly explores death, some covers separation and loss generally and some are related to other areas entirely but simply resonate.

Tracks like Heaven's Gate, Death and Three Days are obvious ones, but Where's The Ocean, Walk & Talk Like Angels and The Dead Are Dancing all resonate. Toni is an incredible artist but not easy listening or 'pop' by any stretch so approach with caution I'd guess.

Others that spring to mind for me:

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren

    Madonna - Promise To Try

    Eurythmics - Angel

  11. I'm so sorry to read this.

Olivia Newton-John did an album of songs about loss and grief a few years ago called 'Liv On' with the help of Canadian singer Amy Sky and Beth Nielsen-Chapman. Here are a couple of tracks from that. I used the first one at my father's funeral last year and it still makes me think of him.

  12. I also just discovered that this David Gray album also deals with a similar experience to my own so I may give this a re-listen too.

The album is dedicated to David Gray's father, Peter, who died of cancer in 2001.

  13. I'm really sorry for your loss. My father passed away three years ago and even though we weren't very close, I still feel his absence every day.
He hated rock music with a flaming passion, which I absolutely adore, but there are a few songs and ballads that caught his attention and at one point he asked me to make him a CD with them and I treasure that memory so much.

This song is one of them and I feel it encapsulates very well one's journey through life and into passing away:

I hope this provides any solace in this difficult time

  15. Annie's My Best Friend. Trust me, @bonnieetclyde.

Anniemal was recorded in the aftermath of Annie losing her boyfriend and you get the sense of longing, loss, grief, life and love. I've read posters on here used it used as a salve for a break-up as well. My Best Friend is beautiful and delicate. I hope it helps somehow. I'm sorry for your loss.

  16. I love that album but didn't know this information. Thanks.

  17. This song is apparently inspired by a death of one of Shirley Manson's high-school mates. The only time they've played it live since 2002 was in London a few years back when the photographer Matt Iwrin had passed.

My lovely cat passed away a few months ago and this song really hit me hard when I really listened to he lyrics.

Look at the stars, I will take one down for you
No matter what the distance, I'll see it through
I'll fill you in between the sun and moon
'Til the end I'll be waiting

And whenever in night, the lights go down
I know that you'll go on to shine somehow
And even if you're miles above the clouds
'Til the end I'll be waiting

Now I lay you down to sleep
I pray we'll meet inside my dreams

So long, my little dreamer, I'll miss your face
We'll always stay connected through time and space
The journey that we shared but now have to leave
Will live inside of us for eternity, yeah

    Little dreamer,
    little dreamer,
    little dreamer,
    little dreamer

Look through the dark, there's a compass in the sky
If ever you're lonely and question why
Remember that I'm always by your side
'Til the end I'll be waiting

And even though we sleep like years apart
The galaxy away is not so far
Because we know the future is our dark
'Til the end I'll be waiting

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray we'll meet inside my dreams
If I should go before I wake
I pray our souls will join again

So long, my little dreamer, I'll miss your face
We'll always stay connected through time and space
And everything we hoped that could never be
Will live inside of us for eternity

So come on my little dreamer, I'll miss your face
We'll always stay connected through time and space
The journey that we shared but now have to leave
Will live inside of us for eternity

Destiny will be a part of you, babe (will be)
I'll feel you in the atmosphere (I'll feel you)
And nothing will be left to fear (nothing left to fear)

Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, said)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh oh)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, ooh)
Little dreamer, little dreamer (Ooh, ooh)

So long, my little dreamer, I will miss your face
We'll always stay connected through time and space (little dreamer)
And everything we hoped that could never be (so mamma)
Will live inside of us for eternity, yeah (I'll see you there)

I will be with you till the end
Mmm, always be waiting 'till the end

So sorry to hear this, I lost my mum not long before Christmas and lockdown has made me feel like I'm sort of in stasis right now.

This may sound odd but there's a song from Rick and Morty of all things which I've found helpful on darker days. It's definitely not the sort of thing you'd expect from that show.

If you ever want to vent or anything I'm always here.

  20. So sorry to hear about this - what a great loss. I hope music can help you in healing. Some songs that are oddly calming/comforting when dealing with loss, for me:
