Spice Girls

Speaking of Forever, this song sounds a lot like Get Down With Me. You can sing the chorus to it's chorus and it fits perfectly. When you listen to various Darkchild album tracks from that era you can see that the girls weren't given anything special (Holler aside) although their voices are unique enough that they did make the tracks their own.

I don't know about that as Geri had only released a pop album a year before to huge success. I think the change in sound was more due to Mel B becoming "leader" after Geri left and pushing to go in that direction. Victoria and Emma were also into R&B music at the time so probably happy to go along with it. I have a feeling Mel C secretly loathed the change in sound, I think she's only made one R&B song (Never Be The Same Again) through her entire career.

It's interesting that Michael Jackson also released a Darkchild produced album the following year that was relatively poorly received and only spawned one hit single. Both albums sound a lot better these days than they did at the time for me. Back then they were just too different from what I expected.
Geri having success with their old pop sound and producers was even more of an incentive to change lanes!

The good thing about the Forever album is that Victoria wasn't rudely ignored like with the other two (especially the Spice album)

Rudely? Or consciously because the vocals weren’t quite up to scratch?! I seriously questioned why she was even there during Spice (edit: Wannabe, not Spice!) !

Because without her they wouldn't have been successful. I say that about the others too. They were all necessary. Each one of them a lead singer, a character for different fans to find. Later on, she became more famous and successful than everyone, but we should never underestimate their power of five.

I know. I just remember wondering what the point of her was in Wannabe. I don't think she was that overlooked in Spice or Spiceworld really, she got a decent share of the vocals after that, but in summer 1996 I was baffled as to why she just pointed and pouted while the others all got a decent share of the vocals. Her bit in Say You'll Be There is the best bit. I'm not a VB hater really (I love her album!).

Isn’t the story that Vicky was late to the recording session?

Didn’t one of them mention that they felt like they were getting Darkchild’s scraps. He really did them dirty for no reason.

He is not the only big time producer to reuse tracks or beats when in demand.

Pharrell/Neptunes, Timbaland, RedOne and Ryan Tedder are all guilty of it and their cookie cutter type production of songs.

During their imperial phases, so many songs could be layered over the top of one another and be an exact identikit of a song.

Listen to the two versions of 2 Become 1 and tell me she wasn’t up to scratch compared to Geri. (Ditto the auditions.)

I corrected myself to Wannabe rather than Spice.

However, I do think Victoria is the weakest vocally though. And live I feel like she has timing issues. But she got some of the best bits in their songs and had some great solo stuff.

I actually prefer Victoria’s vocals on her solo material (I love the first album as well as the unreleased). It’s unquestionable that she’s just as essential to the group as the other four in terms of her character and the groups branding, but I always found her vocals on Spice and Spiceworld (with the exception of Say You’ll Be There) to stick out a bit. Emma and Mel C gave Geri heat on the Jonathan Ross show for not being able to blend, but I think, despite usually being regarded as the weakest singer, Geri’s vocal tone always fit really nicely on the albums and her solo bits, on record, were always great.

No one said it was a debate, and I agree that, technically, she is the weakest vocally, but I love her softer, deeper tones amongst the rest of the group.
I’d go so far as to say that Victoria is actually a very good pop singer- Not Such An Innocent Girl, I.O.U., Mind Of Its Own and Let Your Head Go being great examples.

‘Unconditional Love’, ‘I’d Give it all Away’, ‘(Generate the) Flow’ and ‘I Should Have Known Better’ are also class pop tracks that showcase her voice beautifully too!

I remember an interview with Jimmy etc around the time and the interviewer asked about their vocals (I think trying to get some shade). He said he was surprised how good they could sing and purposely pushed some of them more than they have ever been before. I am quite sure he mentioned Victoria, but could be wrong?

Spice Girls were based on being the New K*nt On The Block, the female Take That, the pussy East 17, all those bands - and even Eternal - had members who didn't sing a lot, so nobody hired Victoria to only sing. She brought her iconic self, her legendary humour, her brilliant lowkey smarts, her Essex girls discovers Gucci charm.
