Spice Girls

Spice Girls Spotify streams for 2024. I know it's the most famous but it's crazy that Wannabe is THAT much higher than their other songs. Makes me feel like a lot of people just see them as a one hit wonder because they've done such a poor job of building upon their legacy.

  • Wannabe - 208.8m
  • Stop - 27.7m
  • Say You'll Be There - 27.2m
  • Spice Up Your Life - 26.1m
  • 2 Become 1 - 24.3m
  • Viva Forever - 13.3m
  • Who Do You Think You Are - 11.7m
  • Mama - 5.7m
  • Too Much - 5.4m
  • Goodbye - 4.7m
  • Holler - 3.6m
  • Let Love Lead the Way - 937k
  • Headlines - 615k
Shocked people felt the need to stream Headlines that much.

I'll never get over the shock of checking Teletext (RIP) on a Sunday evening and seeing 'Stop' had entered at #2. I just assumed every single of theirs would hit the top spot in my delulu 10yr old head, plus 'Stop' just had #1 written all over it - happy go lucky, catchy and memorable dance moves. It probably didn't help that they were out of the country on tour during promotion, they had no proper management anymore, plus general growing fatigue from the public. After that I always doubted the remaining singles' chances of a surefire top spot (although I had faith Viva would be #1 for years on end with it being the best song ever made).

I remember the stress of the Viva Forever release date too, which was originally May (for Viva/Never Give Up) and then having to wait ages for a new release date through June, being 13th July when I gleefully rode the bus to my local HMV only to be told it had been pushed back again to the 20th.

I miss the time that things like this were the most stressful parts of life.

Or standing at the new releases rack, agonising over whether to spend your £2 on CD1 or CD2.

I absolutely love Stop but I'm surprised it's beating the likes of Spice Up Your Life and 2 Become 1.
Justice for Who Do You Think You Are, it's a shame it's gotten a bit forgotten.

Do we know what the latest sales figures are for each single? From memory the singles that have sold more than a million copies were Wannabe, Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1, with Goodbye not far behind with just under 1m. Last time I checked Spice Up Your Life was nearing 900k, and Viva Forever and Mama/WDYTYA were pushing 800k

I think Stop's sales number has significantly due to streaming, with it being the 2nd most streamed song of theirs.

“Too Much” pulling less numbers than “Mama”, SMH. It’s their most underrated ballad.

Also that massive gap between “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mama” made me guffaw.

Too Much deserves the streams that 2 Become 1 gets! Same for Goodbye actually. Goodbye's streaming count is disgracefully low.

Regarding UK sales, here are the most recent ones that were shared (in green)! I've also made some estimations.

Please take the estimations with a pinch of salt! I try and work it out based on the two most recent total sales figures of each single, to determine their average sales per week. Then I add those weekly sales to the most recent total, to work out the sales they could theoretically be on by now. However their streaming could pick up or slow down, so it's impossible to work things out too accurately.

Wannabe
2,400,000 (4xPlatinum) [July 2023]
2,674,000 [2025 estimate]

2 Become 1
1,395,000 (2xPlatinum) [August 2022]
1,498,000 [2025 estimate]

Spice Up Your Life
1,200,000 (2xPlatinum) [December 2022]
1,306,000 [2025 estimate]
It could be higher than this, because it was boosted by Barbie (the film) in 2023.

Say You'll Be There
1,200,000 (2xPlatinum) [June 2023]
1,264,000 [2025 estimate]
However it's doing a lot better on Spotify recently than it was between its last two sales updates. Perhaps it's nearer 1.3m!

Goodbye
977,000 (Platinum) [December 2022]
1,006,000 [2025 estimate]
Aside from a temporary boost at Christmas time, sadly this is one of their worst performing singles on streaming.

Mama/Who Do You Think You Are
914,500 (Platinum) [August 2022]
1,002,000 [2025 estimate]

Viva Forever
826,500 (Platinum) [August 2022]
886,000 [2025 estimate]

Stop
776,000 (Platinum) [March 2023]
910,000 [2025 estimate]
It's crazy how much streaming has turned things around for Stop - it's gone from stalling at around 335,000 sales in the physical era (selling about half of Too Much), to it now potentially being the second best selling single from Spiceworld!

Too Much
756,000 (Platinum) [August 2022]
783,000 [2025 estimate]

Holler/Let Love Lead the Way
322,000 (Silver) [August 2022]
344,000 [2025 estimate]
Can this go viral, please? Its crawl to Gold is painful, to me x

Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)
59,636 [November 2020]
66,000 [2025 estimate]

I'd love for there to be another official update, but it's been a while since Official Charts Company shared anything. It would be great to have confirmation that Goodbye and Mama/Who Do You Think You Are have actually passed 1 million.

Interestingly, Wannabe is likely no longer the best selling girl group single in the UK (with streaming taken into account). TLC - No Scrubs does considerably better numbers than it and could have overtaken around spring 2024. Little Mix - Shout Out to My Ex was also hot on Wannabe's heels, but it seems that has slowed down a bit to now be selling at a similar pace to Wannabe. We'll definitely see No Scrubs going 5xPlatinum (3,000,000) before Wannabe does.

I must admit I didn't like Stop when it first came out. Something about the melody just made it feel like their most childish and cheesy song since Wannabe. And maybe because I'd come to associate that faux-Motown sound with cheesy boybands.

But funnily enough it's become one of my favourites as an adult since actually paying attention to the lyrics and learning it was about Simon Fuller and how the girls felt under too much pressure/needed a break. It has more meaning for me now and the cheesy music combined with the sad lyrics actually makes it one of their more interesting songs. The words are very easy to relate to as a grown up!
