Spice Girls

It really was an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime era. I remember when I first heard and saw them, you felt this incredible shift in pop music. You just knew they were going to be huge.

There is a lot of incredible music in the '90s that I now appreciate more than I did back then. But I won't lie, for a lot of the '90s I felt adrift or lost when it came to music, but when the Spice Girls hit, it felt like things clicked again. And the next few years were some of the best years in pop music ever that I have experienced. And the Spice Girls were a huge reason.

I think things would’ve worked out in a pretty much identical way besides them working with Rodney Jerkins which Geri wouldn’t have approved of.

The two still would’ve gotten pregnant thus no new album in 1998 just another Xmas ballad (possibly the original Goodbye about Dunblane?)

Then 1999 would’ve seen the solo thing happen and priorities towards the group change.

I just can't imagine a situation where Geri had carried on, she struggled with touring and as a result, she lost a sense of influence within the group. The other four were willing to work hard on touring and it feels like they carried the group to a place that it couldn't have reached with Geri.

I’ve actually been reading Geri’s books from the time and they have been really interesting to read!

She was quite clear that they all saw it as a 2 year project from the start and that’s why they went so hard on all the merchandise/brand collaborations and so yeah I struggle to see a different outcome.

She does say the other girls had started to see a longer term picture but I just don’t see anything radically different happening.

Them considering it as a 2 year project, sounds so wild. Maybe they talked about it in the beginning, but surely this idea wouldn't actually still be on the table in 1997/1998? Though I guess the original idea of the 3rd album consisting of duets and solo songs, maybe does allude to the fact they were looking to branch out rather sooner than later.

The attitude they had was let’s give it everything we’ve got for 2 years because the fans will move on after that… It seems the breakdown was in part because Geri was ready to finish at the Wembley Stadium gig and the others wanted to carry on. Once the decision was made she says about how they seemed to get closer and she was left in an awkward position.

It’s quite a fascinating read as it was released so close to everything there was a lot of detail and things I didn’t know or remember. I also have Mel B’s original and Victoria’s to read!

I think a big break was coming either way. They all had their different individual issues they needed to deal with at the time, and getting rid of Simon got the undesired consequence of creating more frictions among themselves because now they didn't have a common enemy to blame for anything they didn't like.
