Spider-Man (including Madame Web, Kraven, Venom, Spider-Verse)

Was anyone else annoyed how it was entirely Peter's fault? Like the stupidity of the original request, then taking known villains to your home despite being warned repeatedly, putting May in danger with the end goal to be to "fix" the villains before sending them back to die... ?

The entire point was curing the villains so they didn’t have to die when they went back…

So I smiled the whole way through the movie last night, honestly one of the best MCU in my opinion!

Think Garfield got a bigger cheer in the cinema than Maguire and the Goblin is still a fantastic villain!

The May death scene was seriously hard to watch. Holland and Tomei sold the hell out of that scene.

Andrew got a bigger cheer than Tobey in my screening as well. I wonder if it’s people being aged out of the original trilogy or if people are finally appreciating that Garfield is probably the best Peter Parker we have gotten.

The ending was also sad. Having both MJ and Ned forget who he was? My heart broke.

We must have been an older crowd for Tobey.

I bawled at the death scene, it was a tough watch. It really knocked the emotional moments out of the park. I honestly, right now, couldn’t fault it but might still be on some type of high. I loved how Dr Ock And Goblin just seamlessly gelled even though it’s been twenty years since they appeared, such strong characters made even better by their actors.

Loved it.

Caveat: Spider-Man isn't one of my favourite characters, and I don't hold any particular affection or nostalgia for the previous iterations/movies.

But, still a really enjoyable film. It wasn't ground breaking or earth shattering, I enjoyed Black Widow and Shang-Chi more than this. There were only 10 people in the cinema so no gasps or yells when anybody appeared...

I'd obviously seen the rumours that Maguire and Garfield would be in it, but my biggest surprised was how much they were in it. I was expecting a 5 minute cameo, not half the film, so that was different from what I thought. Considering the script was from sitcom writers, it wasn't very funny when it was trying to be.

3.5 / 5 from the monkey jury, having no doubt people who are more into Spider-Man would justifiably give it more.

I think it may just be that they worked with Spider-Man but they don’t know his identity?

Yeah, Spider-Man hasn't been erased, just everyone's knowledge of Peter Parker. I assumed that's why he had to go back to a homemade suit by the end, as he never got to know Tony Stark so all his fancy costumes never got made?

I don’t think that. I think everything that happened still happened just no one now knows who Peter Parker is. He still knew Tony, the other Avengers and all the suits were still created but those still alive in the MCU have no memory of his identity and he now has no access to stark technology because Happy doesn’t know who he is.

Even though there's really not much in it, I think I enjoyed this overall the least of the other 3 phase 4 movies. It had the highest highs, but also the most, dare I say it, boring moments.

But they all already died in the past so putting them back would either create new timelines or wipe out the versions of spiderman that we saw, no?
I mean, I can’t attest to the logic of the timelines/erasing history part, but I’m saying that was the intention of the plot.

I really liked this. I was thoroughly entertained.

But the whole thing does kinda fall apart when you think about it. I . . . still don’t really get what Peter was even going for. There’s these vicious terrible megavillains who are literally trying to kill alternative versions of him and he feels sorry for them and decides he wants to save them? What? It was just a bit too convenient for me and didn’t quite feel realistic for a character who is very aware of the damage that these villains can do. I’m also still not entirely sure on the logic of everyone forgetting him but I’ll let that slide. Dr Strange not being precise and clear about his spell also felt very convenient. Just felt like a couple of the characters were making silly and unrealistic decisions for the sake of the plot.

I wish slightly more had been made of the MJ fall! It was one of my favourite moments in the film and I just wanted it to go on longer. It actually felt like a great way to honour Andrew’s films and the audience reaction shows that there is a lot of love for his iteration and his arc.

Speaking of which, we really did Andrew dirty with his stint as Spiderman. The Tobey films are probably my favourite set of films, but Andrew was my favourite Spider-Man. He does charming and cheeky just as well as he does angry and heartbroken. It’s a shame that he’s the only who never got a trilogy - I posted recently that his two films certainly have their flaws, but there’s a lot of great stuff in there too, especially the second one. I’d have liked him to have had a third outing.

I also didn’t really love the bit in the middle where these menacing villains suddenly found themselves in a sitcom bouncing around the apartment and being silly? Like these villains are meant to be threatening and they had this totally stripped from them. I was itching for them to switch back to villain mode. The first hour or so with their introductions was a bit of a mess, too. In fact, I think this story actually needed a bit more time. It could have easily been two films. I’d have had Film 1 of the villains gradually appearing one by one culminating in May’s death / the appearance of the other Spidermen, and Film 2 of the Spiderman working together to sort it all out. It just felt a bit rushed in parts.

But despite these criticisms I really did enjoy it and I can’t wait to watch it again. Tom Holland was excellent.

Do we also think that the conversation with Electro about expecting Spider-Man to be black was foreshadowing for Miles Morales?

Just back from seeing the film and it was a blast! I do agree though that they kinda lost some of the teeth of the villains when they first appeared. I feel like they should’ve kept a couple of them out there and not working with Peter at all during the film, definitely Green Goblin.

Just saw this tonight! Loved it, all the feels were there. Really excited for the future of the series. Never watched Andrew Garfield’s films but might rectify that now. He seemed like so much fun. Tobey was a bit of a snore, thought he was a better actor to be honest.
Definitely going to be doing a full Spider-Man rewatch over the next few weeks.

I presume each villain going back crates a branch timeline? Like Doc Oc returns to a universe where Norman is dead but he will be alive? It’s kinda confusing.
Also, won’t all of the people in those universes now forget their Peter’s?
