Did Dakota sign up for this thinking it was a big Marvel Universe movie? She should sue whoever made this happen.
Yes. The original plot would have linked it to the multiverse saga, as it was tied to Garfield's Spider-Man. But everything connecting it was removed.

Dakota has said in interviews lately that the script was changed so drastically she'd struggle to even tell you at this point what it is versus what it was (mainly because she also hasn't seen the finished movie). It's just a total car crash.

Yeah I need to know what actually happened behind the scenes, when Dakota announced it she tagged Sony and Marvel Studios, I know she seems clueless about Marvel but surely she/her team knew who was making the movie...

It grossed $15M this weekend, for $23M total after 5 days. An absolute disaster.

Even Morbius managed $39M in 3 days.

I need that scene of Dakota crying, puting her hands over her mouth and saying "you did it, you did it" to become a stan twitter staple

Honestly, strip away the "superhero origin story" aspect (terrible CGI costumes included) and you have a enjoyable silly/campy 00s/90s thriller. Another proof of how studios need to stop turning everything into a franchise

I know Sydney also tagged Marvel when it was first announced, and I think at least one of the other two girls might've done so as well, so this is definitely not just a Classic Dakota! moment.

I really want to sit Sony down and ask them why the hell they removed the major plot of the film. This film could’ve been good. I don’t get the point of filming scenes that make the film crucial to the storyline and then gutting it completely mid shoot? For what purpose?

Dakota was great, but she never phones it in.

The villain was laughably bad considering 70% of his dialogue had been ADR’d in and it never matched his lips.

Was there a main storyline ever?

After having to wait a few days to see this film, I must say, that I was not disappointed. From start to finish, I had a childish grin on my face and loved every second of this highly camp super-heroine ‘spider-tastic’ film.

Due to the bombardment of negativity that surrounded this film, I was a little worried and wary going into this, but boy was I pleased that this proved how wrong they were.

Dakota’s blasé almost nonchalant attitude was fantastically cold and removed, yet when the opportunity came to step up and save people, she delivered. Through this, you could see her heart literally changing and b coming the hero she was always destined to be. By the end, Dakota was utterly badass and her being able to predict attacks and protect the girls was brilliant. I was literally on the edge of my seat.

As for the three ‘Spider-Women’. My gosh, it was like my super fantasy come true seeing them come to life in their costumes. Yes it was brief and yes it could have been developed further, but the teasing for future stories was all there. Plus the actual costumes was flawless and like they had been ripped straight from the comic book page.

My only criticism comes from one plot point and I won’t spoil it but it just felt a bit odd. Apart from that, everything else was great and I’d happily give this film an 8 or even a 9 out of 10!

I liked it too. It wasn't perfect, but it was cool.

But the plot doesn't make sense though. It was like a Final Destination movie, but there was no destination.

For me, the fact that the three young girls met Cassandra by chance, they were meant to become Spider Women, etc. seem very unnatural and artificial...

I think what they were trying to imply is that the web of spider which Cassandra had been entrusted with links all the characters together, hence why she was drawn to them/they were drawn to her.

Whether it be Ben, Mary, (the unborn) Peter, Mattie, Anya and Julia, they all gravitate around Cassie as she is the centre point of them all; she commands the web. I think that’s why, earlier in the beginning, every time she used her power, a web would appear, whether it be a crack in a window or broken glass, it was to symbolise the woven web of destiny and fate.

I haven’t seen this yet so I’m just gonna blame the poor reviews and box office returns on misogyny. Partly being wilfully obtuse but also because there’s a specific ire from sweaty incels where female superhero films are concerned.

Incels definitely played a part in the box office failure of The Marvels but I don't think that's the case here at all.

I think a lot of people are put off because the Sony Marvel films are just plain bad. Aside from the Tom Holland Spiderman films, everything they've made has been utter shite. So with the reviews for this one being bad too, naturally moviegoers are going to skip it since the terrible reviews for Morbius turned out to be right.

There are plenty of glaringly obvious reasons for this movie's failure that have nothing to do with misogyny. Clear evidence that the public is having superhero fatigue in diminishing returns for the MCU and other franchises, previous underwhelming entries in this franchise (as @Shockbox says), the character itself not being that well known to the wider audience, awful reviews, its opening weekend competition (the Bob Marley biopic) doing far better than expected. Oh, and the movie's star virtually telling the world it's a piece of shit on her publicity tour probably isn't helping either.

There are many battlegrounds on which the war against misogyny needs to be fought, but this movie is not one of them.
