Square Enix - FFXIV: Dawntrail

Strange, I actually felt that XIII’s cast was one of the stronger points of the game, Lightning aside. Not perfect by any means but I appreciated that the party interactions didn’t revolve so predominantly around Lightning as the main character.

XIII-2 was certainly an improvement on the first game though, the dynamic between Sarah and Noel was great. I’ve still yet to play Lightning Returns, I thought it was a bit of a disappointing move to shift back to Lightning…
To be fair, I haven't played FFXIII in a very long time. I might be able to see more in the cast and their interactions upon a replay.

I definitely see VIII get dragged or subject to debate way more than X ever does.

Funny enough those were like the two entries that missed me when i was a kid and I only ever experienced them fully in the last few years (what with all that covid freetime I was ZOOMING through backlogged games)

Yeah. VIII definitely gets dragged more nowadays, but I feel like there was a period where a certain group of fans were regarding the PS1 games as a kind of golden age to air out their grievances with X.

After Spira, I think VIII has the most interesting looking world in the series.

Coccoon from XIII is very interesting aesthetically too, but they just don't let you see enough of it. It's like you're looking at it through a window or something rather than being in it.

I think a VIII Remake could go down very well if they keep it to one entry. VII is probably the only game in the series where they could get away with the trilogy thing they're doing.

Agreed, the Dollet Mission FMV in a remake would be worth it alone.

I’ve not seen anything about the heavily rumoured IX remake in some time, hoping that’s still going ahead.

Yeah, FFVIII has a lot of strong set-pieces that would definitely go off with modern visuals.

Just thinking of the fight between Balamb and Galbadia alone having remake treatment makes me excited. Agreed that the game doesn't necessarily need a trilogy but expanded story would be great considering they had many ideas that had to be cut due to deadline.

Oh Square, you just had to raise havoc again huh? The One and Childhood Pal, throphies in Ever Chrisis.

. Let the battles begin haha, I bet the person who came up with it is eating popcorn somewhere.

EDIT: Haha someone must have told them to stop teasing people.

I'd love to see a spinoff set in the world of VIII. The gardens are so incredibly designed and would lend themselves so well to either an online game - perhaps something in the vein of Phantasy Star Online - or a tight mission based game, like Type-0.

Okay so I am a few hours into 16 and...eh. I'm not loving it yet.
I'm finding the story a bit bog standard RPG "nations at war, magical creatures helping each side, sullen protagonist initially helping rebels before setting of on his own" etc. Clive is a bit one note so far and a lesser Cloud/Squall type character. It also doesn't help that this game deals partly with a thing called the Blight when I just finished Dragon Age which also had the Blight and it felt properly creepy and insidious.
Quests feel a bit samey too "go here, get a cutscene, fight a monster" rinse and repeat. And speaking of cutscenes, there are too many and some of them drag ooon.

Granted this is early days and I am sure as the game goes on I will change my views on a lot of this. Just so far it falls behind the other FF I have played, expect maybe 15.

I do like combat though, it feels so fast in instinctual. I like how you incorporate your Eikon stuff into your combos etc and the animations for finishers and stuff is gorgeous.
Setting also a big win, it all looks stunning.

Torgal is life. I will die for Torgal. I will kill for Torgal. Torgal is a good boy. Torgal is the goodest of good boys.

Clive develops substantially. He is brooding and sullen at first, because of his immensely fucked up situation, but once he gets past that, his personality really flowers.

He's never like Squall though. He is a sweet and kind person all the way through whereas Squall is kind of mean for much of FFVIII.

I'll take your word for that. Considering how much time I spent playing and how little I seem to have achieved I'm guessing this is a long game so it has time to develop.

I just PRAY there is no sacrifice made by Torgal and he doesn't get taken from me.

So I completed Rebirth tonight and similar to Remake, I thought it was flawless... until the closing act where, like clockwork, Nomura just won't fucking chill. What the original game did so well was create tension and atmosphere by what they didn't show. Sephiroth barely shows up. Once Aerith dies, she is never seen again. You're terrified of the former because you only see his trail of destruction. You miss the latter because she is suddenly, violently gone. It didn't have fucking colour coded dementors swooping all over pivotal scenes and multiple realities crashing into one another and making what should be emotional climaxes just confusing clusterfucks. It didn't have Sephiroth turning up everywhere to expo dump and talk in boring riddles, and it didn't have Aerith's ghost wandering around. How many times will we have fought Sephiroth by the end of the third game? I gasped when Bizarro appeared at the end of Rebirth because why are we blasting through iconography like this already?

BUT. Apart from that? What a game. It basically improved on every single problem that Remake had while perfecting the battle system and balancing three extra characters perfectly. The world map was dealt with perfectly (although I maybe would have liked to explore and be rewarded for exploring; the game pretty much tells you where everything is) and whoever did the script for the cast nailed it.

Coincidentally enough, I finally jumped back into Rebirth on a whim yesterday and sank about six hours into it. It's been a blast outside of being locked in Barrett/Red XIII during the cave segment, otherwise I'm just enjoying sinking into the world. I don't have nostalgia for VII (played it in college with a glitchy third disc) so I'm curious how the story beats will hit me being in this deep into the Nomura brain rot.
