Square Enix

There are quite a few things going for VII that made it so popular though. Ok yes, you know who isn't the first to die in the series but the death was CGI, it was very sudden and shocking. Sephiroth isn't the first villain to go crazy either but with him you had a background story, you know what caused him to snap. Also, FFVII is the first game that played around with more realistic themes, it wasn't dragons, kings and queens, 4 warriors of light etc. At the end of the day, you had a protagonist who had real mental issues, I hate when Cloud is described as emo because that is NOT what he was.

Because of all the above, I am not surprised the game touched so many and why it is and always will be the golden goose of Square Enix.

A demo of the upcoming Theatrhythm game was released today if anyone's interested. I enjoyed the last one on the 3DS a lot and am really looking forward to this, it looks very fun. I love that in addition to having a ton of FF songs they're also adding ones from other SE series like Nier, Mana, Octopath and several more.

I agree with all this but at the same time, there are other great games in the series and sometimes so much FFVII feels like too much of a good thing. It's just excessive.

Versus XIII being brought up always makes me wonder how things would have looked like for the Final Fantasy series if it had been released as originally intended instead of being turned into XV. I'd especially love to know what was originally planned as XV before getting "replaced". Was it an earlier version of what we're now getting as XVI, or something else entirely? I just find it kinda fascinating how the "original XV" is basically a lost mainline FF game.

I read a post from a guy who claimed he worked on Versus. I don't remember much but apparently there were 4 crystals, Ardyn was still a villain and Stella's faith was similar to Luna's, as well as not having a lot more screen time. I am interested in it as well but at the same time, I found it weird having a new trilogy that is connected to FF13, a game that was already a trilogy so I am not that disappointed that was scrapped.

EDIT: Here is a detailed post on Reddit:

This is definitely interesting, but what I meant was the game that was originally planned as XV, before Versus XIII was upgraded to XV and "took its spot". I'm not sure if it was already in active development at that point, but it had to have been in the planning/pre-production stages and there must at the very least be a story, concept artwork etc which either ended up being scrapped or maybe was saved for XVI or other games. I'd love to know more about that.

I forgot how great Theatrythm is, and the new demo has a death grip on me this week. Every song is great, obviously, and the addition of party-management/leveling up characters is just *chef's kiss*. I don't even care how stupidly priced the DLC model for it is!

Biggest decision I've got now is if I'm going to go digital or physical this time! I'm already reviving my desire to build a home version of the arcade version's controller.

I usually prefer physical but I'm going with digital in this case since I think it's the kind of game I'll be playing in short bursts for a long time, so constantly having to swap the cartridge in and out would probably be a pain nn. Also cause I want the deluxe stuff and have some eShop credit so it'll be cheaper this way.

I agree re the character/party management stuff. The base Theatrhythm gameplay is already very fun, but side of things really adds a lot to the game. Would be really cool if the DLC also added characters from the various series featured instead of just songs, shame that's not happening.

I think that was my thought process too re: digital. It's the sort of thing I wished I did with Monster Hunter Rise when I was playing on Switch. Probably easier to just grab the deluxe edition digitally anyway.

I've never gotten super deep into the harder difficulties, so I'm not sure how intense the party management matters yet, but I do think the simple serotonin rush of leveling up and watching your favorite characters wailing on enemies is a perfect match. I can't wait for this release.

Theatrhythm preordered and preloaded and now it's just gonna sit on my Switch dashboard for a week without me being able to play it

(I get this is nothing unusual, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time I ever preordered a digital game, so I'm not used to it ff)

I finished Crisis Core. When Zack is older, VA is actually good so its not that bad overall. The end still made me sad, when you think how much Zack cared for so many people and how much he helped Cloud.

The new Theatrhythm has been getting fantastic reviews, which is nice to see. Seems they really went all out to make it the best game in the series. I was pleasantly surprised to read the "story" mode where you go through the games in the series is quite meaty.

Ok Theatrhythm is excellent. I went through the XIII and XIV sections so far (I wanted to start with X but turns out that's one of the hardest in the game, so it's gonna take me a while to get there), and also played a few other assorted songs and some multiplayer, and it really is so much fun, and you can tell a ton of care was put in the game, not to mention the crazy amount of content (and the music being amazing, but that goes without saying). The quest mode is a really fun way to experience the games, like in the XIV one you begin by exploring the three starting areas, Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah and Gridania, and eventually move on to fighting the various Primals and other bosses in the order you meet them in the original game. And it must be said the Primal themes really are such bangers, like

that's not just something they made etc

I love there's quite a bit of depth to the characters and to the team building side of things too. I only have the XIII and XIV characters unlocked so far, but I already have a bunch of ideas for different teams for when I unlock more. It's a shame you can only save five teams at once though, with over one hundred characters in the game it should have been at least double that. But yeah, really loving the game so far and I can already tell I'm gonna be spending ages on it.
