My copy of FF16 arrived on Friday. I love it so far. I definitely see why people would compare it to Game of Thrones but honestly, battle for the crystals has always been a theme of FF so that is nothing new. The only new thing is the mature elements. Some thougts.
- the characters are so well fleshed out, Cid is amazing. Benedikta is also very interesting, especially later on.
- I got the 2nd Eikon abilities and its very cool you can switch between them in combat. I do wonder if Clive will get Cure eventually because you have only a few potions so far and Torgal's healing abilities are low.
- fighting in general is great, even with non-boss fights it is fun. But bosses though, amazing. Fighting Benedikta was so cool.
- I find it hilarious I suck more fighting as Ifrit than as Clive but Eikon battles are truly epic.
- I was shocked at the scene where Benedikta beheads some peasent and its shown in such a way that the camera angles rolls from a head's POV. I never thought we would see this in a FF game.

I took a risk by opening up that spoiler tag. Good thing you didn't reveal much haha. It sounds great though. The strict restriction on healing items kind of strikes fear into my heart. I'm not that good at action RPGs but I refuse to use those rings. Having played all but the first three NES entries and the MMOs, I have too much Final Fantasy pride to play on anything but action.

I am the same as you haha, I am certainly not the best gamer but I refuse to use any rings. Its going, I died 3 times so I guess I am not that bad after all. I was playing for a long time yesterday and one boss fight was a bit too much for my right hand (I am left-handed) so now my wrist hurts. Its getting better so I might play a little today since I won't be able to until Thursday anyway, I just need to be careful not to overdo it but the story is so good that it is hard to stop haha.
I think Gameranx has a nice review of the game. They mention how the spectacle is unparalleled and the big story moments, which are plenty, are incredible. However the stuff in between seems a bit weak and it’s fairly linear, sidequests being a low point. The main man also gets a good rep.
They also mention the combat is not as smooth at times and suffers a bit in its simplicity.
I don't know, maybe because I am not the best player but I don't think combat is that simple. If you aren't careful enough you can die. I guess they could have added a few more moves but its nice the way you can combine Clive and Eikon combos.
I am disappointed by some sidequests but I think they are still worth doing because you see how some characters are being treated.
Potentially unpopular opinion: Secret of Mana is very overrated. It's one of the best looking games in the 16-bit era but it has a terrible game feel. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the clunkiest action RPGs. Secret of Evermore looks even worse in that regard but I'll never be playing that, so I'll never truly know.
I want to like FF16 because it has so many good elements...but I hate this trend of modern FF games making you run from one cut scene into the next one.

Yeah, Secret of Mana is sort of not really good unless you have nostalgia for it. I do not. Apparently a lot more content was planned for it but didn't make it into the final game, which might explain why it felt so disjointed when I played.
That being said, Trials of Mana (the original 2D version) is actually very good and much better than SoM. Playing that a few years ago was a revelation to me.

The new FF looks really rather brilliant. There is a part of me that misses the "classic" FF trope of having a party of characters you can form a team of 3/4 of though. But I guess there are plenty other games that still do those nowadays.
That being said, I haven't bought it yet and just started a new run of FF12.
I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the plot apparently, which is shameful honestly.
I'm guessing I'm a good bit further than most people here, so I'll avoid actual spoilers and keep it pretty general.
At this stage, I'm thinking it's a good game, but not a good Final Fantasy. There's just none of the depth that you'd normally expect in terms of mechanics. The combat is fun but mindless, I don't feel like I'm mixing up my strategy much, and I'm still steamrolling through most fights (I've died literally once on Action mode, and to an unexpected fight with no potions on hand). The weapons and equipment side is basically non-existent, you're handed weapons in the story that are better than anything you can buy or craft fairly constantly. Even with doing every bit of side content as soon as it becomes available, it still feels like I'm being railroaded quite a lot.
The plot is really enjoyable though, and they've managed to balance the humour a lot better than the last few games, it's much less wacky. The boss fights are really impressive too, they're proper set-pieces, and do actually feel like you're properly being tested.
- The way that the Bearers story is presented is really interesting, but considering the obvious parallels, it's even more tone-deaf that the cast is so white-washed. Like, yikes
- The sidequests are fairly repetitive in terms of gameplay, but the way they're used for storytelling is actually well done. The Chloe side-quest, while predictable, was a real gut punch for example
- the first boss deserved so much better, honestly

Just a couple more days until I can buy this. I might also try to buy the pixel master collection if my budget allows. I want to replay IV, V, and VI and then maybe try out the other three since they are the only FF games (besides the MMOs and XIII-2 and Lightning Returns) that I haven't played. The admittedly janky but still enjoyable Phantasy Star III has me in a retro mood.

I've meant to play them but I just keep getting distracted with other games. And yeah, if they retain all the good parts of FFXIII without the exhausting corridor grind, I definitely would enjoy them.
So if I owned most of the bosses in Octopath Traveler (and even a few optional ones) and didn't find it particularly hard, will I be prepared to do well in Bravely Default 2?
