St. Vincent - Masseduction

Ok so I am utterly obsessed with this. My album of the year so far by an absolute mile. I only listened to it through seeing the rave reviews on here, so thanks guys! Just a question - I’ve only heard this album of hers, will I like her others? By the sounds of most reviews this is a bit of departure for her?

Not as much of a departure as some would suggest. It's most similar to the self-titled album but I think all of her albums do have at least a few accessible moments if you're worried they won't lean enough towards pop aesthetics.

I suppose the biggest difference is that there are probably more songs on this album where guitar is completely absent and Annie has always been known as this phenomenal guitarist. But I think an underrated aspect of her act as St Vincent has been her vocals and songwriting and they do get more of a chance to take centre stage on this album, which I appreciate.

This album is masterful. I love how so many of the songs just build to either incorporate more elements or else undergo metamorphosis into something totally different. The animalistic yelps at the end of Young Lover recently elevated it to one of my favs. Hang on Me and Happy Birthday Johnny are the only ones I don't completely love (not counting the Dancing With a Ghost interlude). AOTY, GOAT, and other suitable acronyms.

Also, queen of making Japanese bonus tracks Japanese again.

If you like this there is a great possibiility that you will like Strange Mercy and self titled. The first two albums are more baroque pop than this sound but nevertheless there are great songs in them too. Basically

if you like Sugarboy, Fear the Future, Los Ageless, Mass Seduction more -> Check out the self titled first
if you like Saviour, Smoking Section, Slow Disco and New York more -> Check out Actor first.

I must admit reading all the pre-release reviews I was expecting some kind of monumental masterpiece. The first 6 tracks indeed are exceptional plus New York, however I don't get the point at all in separating Dancing with a Ghost from Slow Disco? Also Saviour and Young Lover are complete filler to me and let the record down.

I didn't like her last album much bar a few tracks. Strange Mercy is still my favourite but there are some career highs here too.
