I’m not sure about You’ll Be Sorry but I don’t believe that’s the situation with Summer of Love. Whichever source was used for that video (I’m guessing a video tape?) would have been run through AI upscale software to take it up to 1080p. No editing would have been required to piece those good/bad Steps shots together again, it’s presumably as it was in the original source file. It seems that some filters were applied to try and smooth things out that may have looked too rough after being enlarged.
It’s a different process to Stomp and One for Sorrow where they had the original film reels, and had to piece it back together to be the same as the original videos. That was such a high quality source that it stands up to modern music videos! Which is not the case with Summer of Love - for them to try and get it to today’s standards, inevitably it results in it looking quite artificial in places.
By the way, my observations made about this video are intended to be matter of fact, I don’t intend to come across as being ungrateful. I really appreciate the effort that everyone involved has put into the videos. It’s clearly much better overall than what we had originally & the best job has been done with what they had to work with. When I said “disappointing”, I only mean in relation to previous videos - but that’s no one’s fault. I just found it interesting to observe which aspects of the video the upscale couldn’t quite handle!
