Steps - General Discussion

For me, “The Runner” production is just not that clean. The lead synth sounds a little cheap to my ears. I absolutely love the original and I think it was always going to be different to compete with the glory of that, even their live performances were just insanely good, but I just feel maybe this was a little rushed.

I don’t know, I’m underwhelmed by this “era”, but I suppose what did Kylie’s fan get with Step Back In Time? It is really just a bonus isn’t it. I think the difference here though is, do Steps have “casual fans”. I’m curious to see how they will promote this because it’s been so spread out with the single and the megamix (which I did really like and thought was very well executed).

I never saw what a lot of you saw in The Slightest Touch though either, it’s fun, but I wouldn’t seek it out. Whereas the “Heartbreak In This City”, “Something In Your Eyes” and “Take Me For A Ride” are all 10/10 for me, I know, controversial on the last choice but I think it’s criminally underrated. The vocals and the PSB-alike synths are exactly what I’d want from them these days.

For me this already kinda started with Part 2.
Curious which tracks you find to sound cheaper on Part 2? I suppose there’s some tracks that feel like b-sides to their Part 1 counterparts but I think the production is actually quite glossy, especially on Take Me For A Ride. I’d tend to agree about A Million Years and Victorious though, they felt like copy+paste of original tracks but missed the mark in places, especially the latter.

I don't revisit anything on Pt.2 bar the singles. The album tracks certainly don't sound as polished as pt.1....

I guess since it was never meant to be an album so they didnt get the same time and attention...

Overall it just felt very 'What The Future Holds - The Leftovers' to me.
I wasn't too big on the production of The Slightest Touch, Living In A Lie is basically Something In Your Eyes copy-pasted, as others said High felt like solo Claire material, the production really let Victorious' huge potential down, and with Kiss Of Life and Wasted Tears I also felt I heard it before, but better.
This makes it sounds like I hated the album while I still enjoyed every song, I just wasn't obsessed with it as I usually am with their releases which felt a bit odd. Like 'this is a new Steps album, why am I not enjoying this more?'. I guess it might be an expectations thing, where I would have appreciated pretty much any of the tracks as a new one on a rerelease but as a proper album it just felt like a step back.
(I do love Hundred Years though)

I mean you said it yourself, everyone’s opinions and the way they hear things differ so…
I actually like the fact that people like different tracks. My post was a bit tongue in cheek because I love slightest touch so much. It would be very boring if we all liked the same songs so it’s great that Steps are creating a difference of opinion and sparking a healthy debate (that isn’t about what cover of a melfest song from 2003 they should cover).

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard The Runner before but I’ve purposely not sought it out so I can enjoy the Steps version as much as I can with it being the only new track next week.

It’s interesting how many people here have heard Steps version already!

Me, as an 'S Club' kid, seeing people complain about new and upscaled content that I could only dream of.

Yeah I agree with the "casual fans" comment made a bit earlier.

Unless the Runner is to be a single (it seems very unlikely) they may have been better off leading the campaign with Hard 2 Forget, with a platinum megamix push over the last fortnight or so to win over some (if there are) casual fans. I know this sounds awful to say, but I do fear this album will bomb out of the charts much sooner than other new Steps releases (mostly because there is very little new material available and most tracks have been readily available for years).

I hope that it's not a one week chart wonder and then drops massively in week 2.

Wow, talk about memories unlocked!

Also this may be a stupid question, but as I didn’t get to see them back in the day, is this the routine they used for Love U More on the Step One Tour?

Are there any TV promo slots lined up for the album that we are aware of as yet? I’ve not noticed anything.
I’d presume there will be but bar this morning there’s no where else for them to perform! Probably get an online interview or two but there’s no where really for them to promote/perform at the moment.
