Stock, Aitken & Waterman

In preparation for the documentary last Saturday I was DJ while my husband did some DIY. I opted for a more left field SAW playlist rather than the obvious hits (Made In Heaven, Shattered Glass, Just Say No, 100% Pure Pain, Fruit Machine etc) but I think the Dolly Dots 1987 SAW classic was a bit lost on him when he asked “what do they mean exactly by ‘water night’?”.

You're hired! I love that on re-release in 1996 Santa Maria just scraped into the charts at #40 meaning Radio 1 had to play Tatjana. Honestly, what an anthem! To gay men of a certain age it's a bona fide classic and floorfiller.

I do hope Love This Records get a mention in part 2 of the SAW documentary, it is part of their story.
Our Sam’s version went off at Hoopla. I was shook she even played it.

Just caught up with this, loved it. Easily the best S/A/W documentary I have seen.
The Mel and Kim segment was beautiful and yet so tragic and it was very touching to see
Pete's raw emotion after all these years.
I loved seeing Princess - always loved her and she still looks amazing, it's a shame it didn't work out for her
as she had the ability to be one of the UK's finest female vocalists (though I actually think Red Hot is almost as good as Say I'm Your Number One)
The only shame for me was there wasn't a mention of Mandy Smith - she was the first artist signed to PWL Records after all.
Overall though it was fabulous and I can't wait to watch part 2.

It always seems so bizarre that given the undeniable songwriting ability of Stock and Aitken, the output of Love This was mostly hideous cover versions and rubbish. Of course there are some gems, but the difference in quality is astounding.

What's Love This?

I suspect there was a longer doc (with Mandy etc) that was then edited down to just the big 'uns. Would have loved if they got Mandy to appear. But I'm also guessing her situation is so complex with 2023 eyes.
I think she's gone a bit Reynolds Girls and doesn't want to talk about that era of her life, due to unhappy associations of it.

Apols for double post, but Uncle Pete is an adorable softy at heart, he cried at Kylie's Anti Tour, and he started to cry on another programme talking about the pure pop of Too Many Broken Hearts.

Imagine going for a drink with him! Legendary.

I was friends with her on Facebook years ago and she was lovely and always liked and commented when I posted 80s stuff (like she’d post “amazing tune xx” when I posted Curiosity Killed The Cat, Swing Out Sister, Simply Red stuff) so she probably had good memories of the time - but then some lunatics started tagging her in the hundreds and hundreds of 80s photos with weird comments and she made the profile a fan page one.

I also think she became very religious at some point after that.

This would be a pop dream come true.
Kylie owning her PWL material, which is exclusively licensed to BMG and BMG also owning the rights to the PWL back catalogue mean that they could very easily release such a set… I guess it would just come down to timini
Had a big strop at Michelle McManus.
Train sets.
The Sheilas.
Don't forget Josh Dubovie!

Hoping for at least a brief mention of BetterTheDevil Records too, but highly unlikely. After a successful start it just all went, dead. There were always updates about Natalie Powers recording an album which also came to nothing. Would love to hear anything she made with them.

Which reminds me of Scooch… maybe there’ll be a brief mention of Steps vs. Scooch towards the end.

Let’s be honest, the documentary could’ve been a series! If they released a Deluxe DVD of it with lots of unseen footage, I’d be first in line to order!

Mandy Smith should have got at least a mention in the documentary as she was the first person to sign to PWL. Positive Reaction is one of the best things they ever did.

A positive reaction"
