Sugababes - 9th Album

I guess her way of doing promo for the forthcoming TikTok Awards perhaps? I admit it but I'm anti TikTok here, I find it completely useless..

TikTok and Instagram are basically the main way of promotion of lots of artists, specially independent ones. It just results in a lot of engagement that traditional ways of promotion like TV just don't give anymore (or the opportunities are too few). So I'm not surprised she's opening an account. Even if it's just to post the same content.

I think enough time has passed to bring back TOTP to be honest, they can open their own TikTok to post 'viral clips' from the show and engage with that kind of audience.

I have seen a few artists recently share that there isn't anywhere to promote singles anymore.

That said, I think the girls would be perfect for TinyDesk too which has quite a big following.

Isn't the Christmas/New Year edition still around? Also didn't they bring back TFI Friday & The Big Breakfast a couple of years ago? But than it was cancelled or something, I guess it just didn't stand the test of time?

yeh tiny desk would be perfect platform for them and would be the thing if anything to send them viral.

I think think there's a place of TOTP and CD:UK type shows, it's just a case of re-working the format. Yes, social media can do wonders but there's nothing quite like seeing someone perform live on TV and it would be lovely to see music shows back instead of just delegated to a 3 min segment at the end of a chat show.

There was a show in Greece (a European format, I don't know its origins though) with charts, like ''the best selling pop songs of all time'' or ''the most successful love songs of the 21st century'') based on radio plays and sales, with singers as guests, singing tributes and their own songs. I would love to see something like that in the UK.

We have that in Germany too, it's been on for ages and seems to work still. But yes, only working with the nostalgia factor.

We definitely need something for bands/popstars to perform on like The Word, The Tube, CD:UK, even Top of the Pops. We don’t have music dedicated shows over here other than bloody Jools Holland.

A new music show just needs to feel a lot more modern than a straight up revival of TOTP.

Maybe something with a live studio audience, a revolving host (celebs/entertainment names a la SNL), clever/sleek sets like the VEVO originals some artists do, an A-list performer each week, a dedicated slot for lesser known/breakthrough acts...

Have each act perform a second song which goes straight to YouTube and could be creative cover versions a bit like Like a Version does. Have someone like Amelia Doldenberg doing quick lil' offstage interviews/between segments.

It could be great but probably feels like a lot of work and risk for any channel in 2024 to set up and invest in. BBC don't have the money, ITV don't have the creativity - so it's probably C4, and then is anybody watching to make it worth it?

TOTP could come back as online only with performances and maybe condensed into a monthly show for broadcast? Similar to the VEVO Studio Performance series. Upload the full performances on TikTok, YouTube with some exclusive online content.

Aren't boomers part of the Sugababes target audience? They listened with their kids back in the day
How does that make them part of the target audience? The boomer parents were just the means to get a sale since kids don’t make their own money, whether they liked the music or not was not the concern of the Label (or band).

I suspect a lot of Sugababes albums were bought by Mums, and certainly more so than other pop groups.

I’ve seen the same said about Girls Aloud, but neither group made music “for the Mums” like say, Celine Dion or Adele did (okay, an argument could be made for Change).

All I’m saying is that the youngest Boomer is in their 60s now and I have a hard time imagining that is the age range the Sugababes are targeting (in an overall sense).

Guys a music show is not going to work in 2024.

There’s no demand, TV audience, nor any money in the music or TV industries to facilitate a new TOTP. No label is flying their act to a TV studio when a TikTok of them doing a dance in their kitchen for free has greater reach.
Hmm. But labels are still sending their acts to perform on Fallon, Kimmel, GMA etc in the US. SNL shows that certain kinds of televised live performance promo can still be impactful for artists. I'd argue there is a clear gap in the market for this. They just need to build the right show around it.
