Sugababes - "Weeds” + 9th Album

I’m sure there’s a fee to get your music playlisted on radio? Maybe it’s harder for independent acts?
Many years ago, I did radio industry training. I didn’t pursue it in the end because it was near impossible to break into. I don’t know how different the landscape is today. There used to be pluggers, who would be employed to persuade radio stations to playlist songs. I remember speaking with said plugger and she would tell wild stories about how record companies would fly her out to amazing locations for intimate gigs and listening parties. I remember her mentioning a particularly generous Mariah Carey offer. This was 20 years ago and the landscape is so different. I think now there are particularly amazing PR companies that have the edge over others in terms of getting traction.

It has always been harder for independent acts without the big cash, contacts and industry machinery behind them - but equally, now some acts are opting out of big companies and using independent professional services like the company Absolute label services, to do it themselves, largely to retain control (mainly of the cash because the spending/profit margins are insanely weighted towards the record companies rather than artists) and artistic freedom.

It has to be said though, the BBC really shouldn’t get up to the shenanigans that indie radio does. Jungle is perfect for Radio 2. There is still time for it to be playlisted. The pace has changed.
