Taylor Swift - Midnights

He/Him
I truly wish there was a way to separate the fans from the "Swifties." 8/10 when someone tells me they dislike her, it's because of everything surrounding her and not the actual music. There's loving all of her albums while still recognizing their weaknesses, and there's going on TikTok to be holier than thou and making up theories. I get annoyed when she plays overly into it too, but I'm able to separate my enjoyment.
Yep! And this “reclaiming” of the word Clowning hurts my soul when every tiktok starts with something along the lines of “Now this might just be me clowning” proceeds to laugh at themselves…..

Yeah, I feel pretty firmly settled into a state of disappointment with this one, after five or six listens.

Jack and Taylor’s work across reputation and Lover is the most obvious sonic point of comparison but on a more visceral level this honestly gives me the same gut feeling I got from star-crossed… repeat plays feeling obligatory but also sort of making me dislike it as a collection more ddd. I think some breathing space away from my initial expectations can only do it good but for now, even in the better or more memorable moments, this ain’t it.

The comparisons to "star crossed" as a negative thing...I'm over here hoping anything on Midnights is half as good as "if this was a movie.." or "gracias a la vida"
Yeah maybe I’m just easily pleased but I loved star-crossed and I love Midnights. Sometimes all I need is an easy-breezey little sad album from one of the girls to listen to while I wistfully stare into the distance, what can I say!

This might be her worst written album. And I kinda think it veers into “bad” territory, alongside reputation and Lover. I personally didn’t really like folklore or evermore, but this is certainly a regression and indulges in her worst personality traits (that her fans egg on at every opportunity).

Truthfully, I long for the girly naïveté of her early work, or the titanium-clad Pop of 1989.

There is something that feels fairly juvenile about the return to the rep/Lover speak ‘n’ spell subject matter after the maturity she displayed taking the “wait no I’m a storyteller” route on folklore and evermore, where it felt like she had grown up a bit.

I really enjoy the album and its soundscape feels like it was crafted specifically for me (yes basic yes gay!!!) but it does feel a tad disappointing to watch her return to the revenge/love tropes of 2017-19. That said - please play Mastermind at my funeral, please and thank you.

100 from The Independent? That score is for the wrong album.

Oh, have the swifties turned? Juicy.

Excited to play this tomorrow morning. Because when the folklore/evermore brigade hates it, i'll probably love it. Cheers.
