Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department

I think Mtrt meant ‘safe’ in the sense that if Beyoncé didn’t win this time, there likely would have been a huge backlash (and rightly so!), which the committee may have wanted to avoid. Cowboy Carter is a great album and she absolutely deserved the win - not taking that away from her at all - but there is a slight sense that she was awarded this time partly to right the wrongs of past snubs. Hope that makes sense.
You’re really in here dismissing everything Beyoncé accomplished with Cowboy Carter - she won because it was a great album.

The win is made more poignant by the fact that it’s a genre-bending country album exploring the role of black people in the history of country music, and the discrimination Beyoncé herself felt in the country music space, and current political climate in the US reduces everything achieved by non-white or non-cisgender male people as ‘DEI’.

I didn’t dismiss any of that in my post actually.

I do see a sonic shift coming from her, but I think that has more to do with her current general vibe being much less ‘tortured’ (for lack of a better word) these days.

Also, she cares about the Grammys, yes. But it’s not like it’s some secret that this album didn’t go over as well as past efforts. If she was going to be fueled by the response to the album, I’m sure it was set in motion long before tonight.

Yeah, I don't think TTPD not taking home any awards would be a huge motivator for Taylor to switch it up, although it does feels like a natural step at this point anyway. For the Grammys to be the ones to light a fire under her, I think they'd have to snub her in all of the major categories.

Yeah, I don't think this was a Red losing moment (that was one she was really really hopeful about winning....she's reached new heights since then and doesn't seem to care quite as much as she did pre-folklore. I'm guessing she went into last night knowing her chances were lower than usual). I'd guess she's already aware of some of the feedback from people wanting her to change it up more sonically, so maybe she's already taking it into account...we shall see.

These have me screaming

Back to Taylor, part of me still wishes she didn’t win for Midnights as I find it to be one of her weakest albums, and the win also helped fuel a recent wave of backlash against her which led to the unfair initial muted response to TTPD, which I believe to be her magnum opus and much more deserving of the award. That said, I get that Midnights was ‘bigger’ in terms of singles and wider impact, so it is what it is.

I think she’ll put out the remaining two rereleases to relatively minimal fanfare this year, otherwise keeping a lowish profile, and then come back all guns blazing in Autumn 2026 with a new Big Pop Album and fresh sound. I could also lowkey see her getting engaged/married at some point in the next year as well lol
As I said in the Cowboy Carter thread, that album started a debate about ownership of genres, genres in general and actively makes a huge amount of people in the US angry. Plus there is brillant music on it. Not everything obviously, but a lot. And even a Beatles cover, which is pure Academy catnip.

No other nominee deserved the award more this year, no matter her personal history with the category. And it is actually sad that some people downplay her win as a safe choice, no matter which interpretation is behind it.

EDIT: Or what @CC3332 said a couple posts above in a more eloquent way already, didn't saw that. But yes to you and your post.

I think her next album should be something dance oriented. It’s the one area of pop she’s never really explored so it would be fresh for her and I do think she needs to take this power and go imperial pop phase again.

When I say dance I mean something like her cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow or something like I Love You Always Forever. Breezy, a little 90’s, a little ethereal. Something that feels at home for her but would also make her music exciting.

I don’t need a pop rock album in the vein of Hits Different etc anymore cuz I already know what it will sound like. She needs to breathe new life into this discography.

I’ve been calling for this for a decade and she’s gotten close but not quite there. The nice thing about an avenue like that is it would still sound at home alongside the breezy alt rock of So High School or Hits Different, so would theoretically not be too huge of a swerve for her, and she could still pursue both.

Suddenly I need her cover of Jennifer Paige’s ‘Crush’

An entire album within the soundscape of all of Beabadoobee's work would be interesting, particularly her most recent album. Get Rick Rubin on the phone immediately.
