Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department

Not @Sinful getting some traction on Twitter

(The way some of them don’t realize 2013 wasn’t that long ago and some of us have talked like this for ages)

loml is kinda coming for Guilty as Sin as my favourite song on the album. It's probably her best ballad ever for me at this point, and the final chorus in particular is a career-best moment for her as an artist, period. The way she manages to capture the utter enormity of a shared lifetime slowly becoming a death is legitimately soul-destroying. It's maybe the most desolate she's ever sounded too.

I-

Also, kind of crazy that we're coming up on a year without a new release, the longest since Red TV - Midnights, yet it doesn't feel like it. Not that we need a new release right now or anything but a 1 year+ gap has become somewhat rare for her.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully understand the hold Guilty As Sin has on me. It is 100% my second favourite song of hers (behind Style) and I am captivated EVERY SINGLE TIME.

It just starts so gentle and mournful, the way it builds is completely hypnotic, it’s like it draws me in to the very fabric of music. Just this poignant, timid little ballad which crescendos into a horny, breathtaking, throttling final chorus.

“I choose you and me, religiously…

WHAT IF HES WRITTEN MINE ON MY UPPER THIGH ONLY IN MY MI-II-IND”

Even writing this, I can feel the yearning in my chest. Fuck me, what a song. She better All Too Well/Cruel Summer this at some point in the next five years.

I also love it - I love the singular reference to the hedge maze - for literary context. It really does feel like this album showed another step up in her lyrical maturity.

Earlier Taylor would’ve overwritten this and used every single Tudor romcom / fantasy Romeo allusion.

Similarly down bad is so good that it’s a love affair metaphor based on an alien abduction but you could casually listen a hundred times and not pick up on that.

I love me some Marina- but there’s a lyricist who literally seems to name a song first and then list every image and metaphor that springs to mind.

Taylor is honing her songwriting craft light years above her peers.

A classic. It's almost painful that it's one of her all time best and it didn't/isn't/won't get the attention it deserves.

I also love how much of a different feel this piano version gives
