Tennis

I think Serena did fine and will be okay with her loss. Rybakina played pretty great, painting the lines and was fortunate Serena was having an only okay sort of day.

Down a break at the start of the 2nd set, Serena really turned it on for more than two games, seemingly deciding she was going to dictate and for the first time in a while I believed in her. It didn’t happen today, but if she can hone in on that attitude more confidently and more often the tennis is definitely still there.

If she’s fully fit Wimbledon could be very interesting…

There are always thinkpieces about this nonsense every time she doesn't win a Slam. At this point people must just be copying and pasting the same opinions every time a Slam comes around.

Well you can't really blame the press either. Her name = clicks and if she actually managed to finally get Slam #24 these articles would likely stop.

I worry that the internalised pressure Serena will put on herself will hinder her chances at Wimbledon this year. It's likely her best chance to get the 24th slam but she looked defeated from the moment she stepped on court at Roland Garros yesterday.

Praying I'm wrong though and she absolutely dominates Wimbledon!

I wouldn't mind so much if any of them touched on the real issue - that a woman of almost 40 and three men including one of the same age are still essentially carrying the sport.

I see Sloane has already lost heavily; just imagine how that final eight looks if Iga, Sofia and Coco don't come through today.

Musetti has wilted in this match against Djoker. I feel really bad for him.
I had to leave after the second set but I'm gutted for him. Only 19 and many more chances to come, but he had a real opportunity for an upset.

The progression of Sakkari, Gauff and Krejcikova to their first slam quarter final, along with Badosa and Rybakina yesterday, means there are only six players left in the top 50 who have not reached one - and the second highest of those is ranked 30th. Sabalenka really, really needs to sort her shit out and do it fast.

Excellent matches on the women's side today, the bottom half of the draw delivered! I've become emotionally invested in the idea of Pavlyuchenkova becoming our new Schiavone, but I was impressed with Zidansek today too and wouldn't be mad about her making the final instead.

The women's matches today were so fun.
Delayed the men's matches for once.

Gutted for Rybakina (the Serena curse lives on). Hopefully she'll have many more chances to come.
Happy for Pavs though.
Badosa was super nervous and couldn't hold on in the end.
Zidansek is so cute. I feel like a proud dad watching her win. I think she has the better chance to get to the final over Pavs.

I was thinking about this earlier and realised that Pavlyuchenkova is in a pretty similar situation to Schiavone - she's been a quarter finalist at all four slams (although Francesca didn't actually complete that set until after her win) and is the same age almost to the week. Still think the women's draw looks fairly barren in terms of name recognition - hoping Wimbledon holds together a bit better.

Also hoping the winner of Tsitsipas-Medvedev annihilates Zverev in the semi final.

Halep's injury is now 10-times more frustrating, but here we are I guess. Honestly I'd be happy with anyone winning except Sakkari. Pavlyuchenkova has put in the work for a long time, and the others seem super nice, especially Krejcikova.

Anyone wanna start the Wimbledon predictions??? Can't wait for Martic to take out Bouzkova in the semifinals, and then see Cornet finally win her slam.

It'd be nice to think Wimbledon will be a bit less of a shambles, but consider the make-up of the current top 10;

- Five players who have yet to go beyond the third round (including two who haven't actually won a match)

- Two players who have never reached the quarter finals despite winning tournaments on grass in the runup

- A player who has reached the semi-finals but got crushed when she got there and is throwing away chance after chance to win a slam

- The defending champion, who comes in having missed several weeks due to injury

- A near 40-year-old legend of the game, who you'd still trust to make the final over all of the above without question.

Ash is injured. Doubt she'll be 100% in time for Wimbledon.
Naomi will more than likely skip.
Simona also injured - trying her luck at Bad Homburg, but I just see her causing herself more pain.

Other contenders: Petra - injured, Garbine - injured, Serena - injured.

I think it's going to be a mess. Can't wait.
