The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate; RESULTS

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by Blob, Sep 1, 2011.

  1. It's the 2007 number 1 singles rate!

2007 saw the full introduction of legal downloads into the chart. The year saw Leona Lewis, Sugababes and Timbaland gain two number 1s a piece (where did it all go wrong?). Rihanna spent 10 weeks at the top of the chart with the breakthrough single 'Umbrella', Eva Cassidy gained a posthumous number with Katie Melua and Popjustice favourite Robyn gained her first (and only) UK number 1 with Kleerup and 'Every Heartbeat'.

The number 1 single sold on average 55,425 copies a week, Leona Lewis had the most first week sales with 'Bleeding Love' at 218,805 copies sold in it's first week. It was also the biggest selling single of the year. Take That's 'Rule The World' was the biggest selling number two of the year and sold more than their number one that year 'Shine'. 'Hey There Delilah', 'Valerie', 'Sweet Escape' and 'Foundations' were a few more of the best selling number twos of the year. 'Foundations', 'Hey There Delilah' and 'Girlfriend' were all number 1s on the download charts but not on the Official single charts.

As usual PM me your scores out of 10 for each song please. The closing date is Sunday 11th September midday with the first result coming later that night. I think it would be best to rate McFly's double A-side singles separately (not that it'll make much difference I don't think) but it seems fairer to the rate.

Here's a list on the number 1s you'll need to score. Good luck and I look forward to the rest of the rate!

Sorry some aren't linked with the proper music video's but they aren't on youtube.

There actually aren't many good songs at all!

  3. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

    So...Rihanna vs Leona?

And McFly had 2 #1s in a row? I remember neither of those songs.

  4. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

Just sent my scores in. By no means the worst year for number ones, but this list doesn't live up to the general amazingness of 2007 at all. Some of the best singles of the year are nowhere to be seen!

Bleeding Love is one of the most overrated songs of the noughties. I still haven't figured out what people like so much about it (other than her vocals), it does absolutely nothing for me.

My guess would be a double a-side.

  6. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

About You Now and Bleeding Love - YES
A Moment Like This and Umbrella - Yes
Walk This Way and Stronger - yes
Everything else - Meh / eh / NO

  7. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

Yes it was a double A-side. I think it dropped to something like #20 in it's second chart week. I thought it might be fairer to rate them separately.

Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

    Oh definitely.
I guess the two of them are one 'release' but in the end it's songs we're rating here.

  9. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

Some pretty good stuff in there. And obviously some absolute dreck. 2007 might just have been the last half-devent year for pop...or the pop charts, I should say.

  10. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

    STRONGER TO WIN.

  11. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

How have McFly had 20-odd top five singles within the past 10 years, including several #1s, yet the only song of theirs I can actually remember is 'All About You'? I have no memory of this Katie Melua/Eva Cassidy 'What a Wonderful World' cover either.

I think I'll be alone in rooting for Beautiful Liar*. Have I still not woken from my video-induced trance?

*not to be confused with Beautiful Girls, which I'm slightly horrified to discover was ever #1

  12. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

Give It To Me, Beautiful Liar, Umbrella, The Way I Are, With Every Heartbeat, About You Now and Bleeding Love are all worthy of winning. Eva Cassidy is dead so we should be nice to her song.

  13. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

I'm actually quite surprised how easy it is to split the songs into "good" and "crap", there's a well defined gap between the two in that list.

That said, if Girls Aloud win this one too, I give up.

There are only four good songs that I know. Have to look a few up. I'm with Citoig about Girls Aloud winning. Walk This Way is awful.

  15. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

There are five songs on that list that I love. I wouldn't care if I never heard the other songs ever again, but I'm going to try and rate fairly.

  16. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

Girls Aloud haven't a chance this time. Everyone hates Walk This Way. Umbrella, With Every Heartbeat, About You Now and Bleeding love will make up the top 4, I'd imagine.

Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

I don't. It was dissapointing, extremely subpar for both bands, but still a nice song.

  18. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

It's still Girls Aloud. That'll help it a lot. I would be surprised if it didn't make the top half at least.

  19. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

I enjoy Walk This Way quite a lot and compared to a lot of these songs it is better. It'll probably get a 7/10 from me.

  20. Re: The 2007 Number 1 Singles Rate

I would be surprised if Walk This Way went far, it's not much liked really.
