Last year, 31 of us pulled together to vote for some incredible ladies of R&B who released albums in 1998. Leading the pack were Brandy, Monica, Lauryn and Whitney - but Whitney came out on top, with a little help from that Thunderpuss remix of one of her best songs ever. But now it's time for the sequel. The R&B landscape has changed a lot in twenty years, and the R&B of 2018 is very different from the R&B of 1998 in many ways... but some legends of the game were still around turning out 10/10 material in 2018... so here we are, with a rate to honour the girls who are still here 15 years, 20 years, or even 28 years later, bringing their A-game and showing everyone else how it's done. Legendary girl group En Vogue finally gave us their long-delayed seventh album, showing that their vocals and consistency have not dipped from the days of their six #1 US R&B number ones. R&B icon Toni Braxton gave us her ninth album, giving us classic R&B quality and grabbing her first solo Grammy nominations since 2001. And the 2019 Billboard Music Awards' Icon Award recipient, the amazing Ms. Mariah Carey, really went the distance with her 2018 album Caution, putting her back into the spotlight where she belongs. This rate celebrates these three influential artists and their 2018 output... ...but wait, there's more! I haven't forgotten the other ladies of R&B who started in the '90s or early '00s and were still bringing out quality material in 2018. Who knows, you might even discover some new faves! Okay. What do I need to do? Simply rate each of the songs on a scale from 0 to 10. I'll allow decimals, but keep it sensible. Nobody wants me to screw up the results because I accidentally put down 5.2642 instead of 5.6422. You may award one song, and one song only, a score of 11. Choose wisely. When you're done, send me a message (using the little envelope in the top right corner of your screen) that contains your scores for all the songs. There are no optional sections in this rate, so you must give a score to all of the songs. Can I rate a version that isn't on the album? For songs with multiple versions (e.g. single edits that differ from the album, or dance mixes that you prefer to the original) rate the version that you prefer. Do I have to include commentary? Commentary is highly encouraged, but is not mandatory. Sure, you can just send in a bunch of numbers, but it will make the elimination posts a lot more interesting if you tell us a bit more about why you gave the scores you did. Did Long As I Live really hit you at a vulnerable time in your life? Did Old Times make you really think about police shootings in the US? Did A No No make you want to live an NYC subway fantasy? Did Rocket make you want to do an old-school photoshoot in the desert? I really can't stand some of the songs in this rate. Can I still vote? I fully accept that you will all have differences of opinion. That's the point! Feel free to submit anyway. But if your ballot is really just trolling (like if you give zeroes to the entire Mariah album), I will throw it out. VOTES ARE DUE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 29 AT 23:59 PACIFIC TIME.
